BATTERY IGNITION SYSTEM

Ignition coil
• Ignition coil consist of soft iron strips
bound together by insulating material
which acts as a central core.

• Core has primary winding having 100 to

200 turns and secondary winding having
about 20000 turns. This entire unit is
assembled in a container.

• Two terminals switch wire & contact

breaker are coupled to primary winding.
Secondary winding connected to high
tension central terminal to central terminal
of the distributor.
Contact Breaker
• Mechanical device for
making and breaking
primary circuit of the
ignition coil.

• Consists of fixed metal

point of hard metal which
bears against another metal
point which is on spring
loaded pivot arm.

•When the contact points are closed, the electric current flows and
when they are open, the circuit is broken and flow of current stops.
WORKING OF BATTERY
IGNITION SYSTEM
• When the ignition switch is on, contact breaker points are closed which
allows current flow from battery through ignition coil.

• It develops magnetic field across primary winding and induces a e.m.f.

• When breaker point is opened by cam fitted pivot arm, opens the
primary circuit and magnetic field in primary circuit collapses.

• The flow of current is reversed when the battery voltage becomes less
than voltage across the condenser plates.

• Quick reversal of current in the primary winding reverses the magnetic

field in coil causing very high voltage induced in secondary winding.
• When contact breaker is opened, the distributor rotor connects with a
contact to spark plug and high induced voltage jumps across the air
gap of spark plug producing spark.

 CONDENSER EFFECT

• When flow of current through primary winding is interrupted,

magnetic field begins to collapse and this collapse attempts to re-
establish the flow of current.

• If the condenser is not provided, the current would be re-established

which would result into a heavy arc across the separating contact
breaker points and the energy of ignition coil will be consumed by arc
which may burn the contact breaker points.

• Condenser prevents arcing across the breaker points and prolongs its
life.
Magneto Ignition System
• Magneto is generator of electric current driven by engine.
• A magneto consists of an armature built up of laminated soft
iron plates and wound with insulated copper wire and a
laminated soft iron pole pieces attached to permanent magnets.
• In this system, magneto replaces battery and induction coil of
the BIS.
• High voltage is produced when magneto is rotated at high
speeds.

WORKING OF MAGNETO
IGNITION SYSTEM
• Magnetic field in the primary and secondary windings is produced
by a rotating permanent magnet in the armature.

• As magnet revolves a rapid change of magnetic flux in coil takes

place.

• To induce high voltage required for sparking, a rapid breakdown of

magnetic flux is carried out by contact breaker.

• Rest of the working is same as BIS.
