On Concrete - Tanzeela Yaqoob Bhat

Concrete is a mixture of cement, coarse aggregate, fine aggregate and water that hardens over time. It is widely used in construction. The components are mixed in fixed proportions to achieve the required strength, specified as M5, M10, etc. with M representing mix and the number representing strength in MPa. Workability refers to how easily concrete can be transported and compacted. It is affected by the water content, shape and size of aggregates, and their surface texture. Proper workability allows concrete to be easily placed and compacted to achieve optimum strength.

CONCRETE’

Definition of concrete:
 Word concrete has come from a latin word i.e. ‘CONRETUS’ which means compact,
condensed and artificially stone resulting from hardening of a mixture of cement, coarse
aggregate, fine aggregate and water.

 Concrete technology deals with study of properties of concrete and its practical
applications.

 Components of the concrete are mixed in a fixed proportions to obtain the required
strength. Strength of mix is specified as M5, M10, M15, M20, M25, M30 etc where M
stands for mix and the number stands for strength.

STEPS INVOLVED IN CONCRETE
Step1 BATCHING

Step2 MIXING

Step3 TRANSPORTING

Step4 PLACING

Step5 COMPACTING

Step6 FINISHING

Step7 CURING
Workability:
 Workability is the ease with which the concrete can be transported and
compacted in a given framework
 The concrete in fresh state require good amount of workability so that it can be
easily placed and compacted.
 Concrete shall have sufficient workability so that the strength is optimum.

FACTORS AFFECTING WORKABILITY

1. Water content
2. Shape of aggregate
3. Size of the aggregate
4. Surface texture of the aggregate
Advantages and disadvantages of concrete
Advantages Disadvantages
1. Material used in the manufacturing 1. Concrete without R/F has low
is easily available. tensile strength and thus it is liable
to crack easily.
2. Easily handled and moulded into
any desired shape when freshly 2. Heavy in weight, requires strong
mixed shuttering when used along with
R/F.
3. Fire resisting
3. Requires more time for curing to
4. Quite durable develop strength.
5. Can be used for various purposes
like constructing buildings, walls
etc.
Strength of concrete
Compressive strength
Split tensile strength
Bending strength

Characteristic compressive strength of concrete

It may be defined as the compressive strength of 150mm concrete cube fully compacted and cured under
standard conditions below which not more than the 5% results are expected to fall.
