SAFETY

EDUCATION
Safety education is the teaching of specific
knowledge, skills and understanding that children
need in order to stay safe in a given situation.
Generally, schools themselves are safe places for
children of all ages, so the focus of safety and risk
education is to prepare children and young people
for the world outside of school, now and in the
future.
BENEFITS OF SAFETY EDUCATION
- Safety education can enable children and young people,
and their parents/carers, to put effective safety measures into
practice.

- Safety education can help young people make decisions

about, and undertake, a wide range of activities - sport,
adventurous activities, travel, work experience - confidently
and competently.
BENEFITS OF SAFETY EDUCATION

- Safety education should enable pupils to keep themselves

safe and to contribute to keeping others safe.

- It helps students be aware of possible hazards in different

areas of their lives, and be able to take appropriate decisions
and actions.
Safety education is not about isolating young people
from all hazards – the bumps, cuts and bruises
which are a normal part of growing up - but about
equipping them to deal safely with a wide range of
situations.
SAFETY EDUCATION INCLUDES:
- The skills of hazard awareness and recognition, and risk
assessment and management.

- Personal and social skills like assertiveness

- The role of emotions in recognizing and managing risky

situations.

- Playing a part in making communities safer

Effective planning for safety education will help

teachers to promote key skills and thinking skills:
-Information technology
- Improving pupils’ learning and performance 
- Information processing
- Enquiry
- Evaluation

- Working with others 
- Problem solving 
- Reasoning 
- Creative thinking
The general teaching requirement for health and
safety requires teachers to teach pupils how to:

- Recognize hazards

- Assess risk

- Control risk
ACCIDENTS AND
ITS ELEMENTS
According to the National Safety Council, an
accident is sudden, unexpected event that harm to
body and livelihood, if not death. Although an
accident is not intentional or expected, it could be
prevented.
In a study made in the Philippines and in other
countries, it appears that accidents do not just
happen. It is usually caused by carelessness that
lead to danger. Accidents could be prevented when
people are careful and have knowledge of what to
do when there is danger in the surroundings.
According to a study, 85% of serious accidents
are caused by mistakes committed by people. Safety
education is important. Proposed bills concerning the
care of humans, industry, and environment could also
help.
Most accidents occur without warnings. Ordinarily,
accidents come from unidentified causes. Sometimes
accidents are only slight injuries, abrasions, incisions,
lacerations, and burns, while serious injuries are bone
fractures which may be temporary or those that last long
or lead to death. These injuries could happen anywhere.

three elements of accidents

1. First, accidents may happen to anybody of any

age, young or old. For example, to children
because of their innocence and to adults because
of the weakness of their bodies. Cautiousness is
important to avoid injury or death.
three elements of accidents

2. Second, accidents take place unexpectedly

anytime, anywhere. It could happen at playtime
and recreation.
three elements of accidents
3. Third, in accidents, properties may be involved. For
example, house and furniture could be lost or damage
in fire, earthquakes, flood, etc. They could cause
injury to the body, like fractured bone, wound, or
incisions, or lose of life. Too much expenses and
stress are part of an accidents.
Being careful is the first step in avoiding accidents. Such step
includes giving importance to the safety rules, which people
should follow. Having appropriate laws that care for the
citizens is important to lead a life safe from accidents.
TYPES OF ACCIDENTS

1. Accidents
2. Accidents 3. Accidents in 4. Accidents in
at home
in the school the community the workplace
Home Accidents

It is often said that the home is the safest place in the world. But sometimes, the
home could also be dangerous place because accidents could happen there, like
falls, slips, burns, and poisoning. These are commonly caused by disorderliness,
improper use of things, improper use of furniture, slippery floors, and poor lighting.
Making wrong decisions, adults negligence of children, personal weakness,
hurrying, intoxication, and physical deformities could cause accidents at home.
Not keeping things in their proper places and the use of poisonous things and
flammable material could also cause loss and destruction at home.
School Accidents

Most accidents in school usually happen because of its location and

structure. There are school activities recognized to have inherent
hazards, such as physical education classes and intramurals or sports
competitions. Potential hazards in schools are the corridors, rooms,
gymnasium, and science laboratories. Accidents could cause bone
fractures, burns, and wounds. Students' carelessness and playfulness
may also lead to accidents.
Community Accidents
Accidents in the community could be caused by obstructions
in the streets, violation of traffic rules, negligence of
pedestrian, and pollution. Accidents may happen in air, water,
and land transportation. In addition, people's lack of concern
for the safety of others, lack of information, and direct
disobedience of the law may cause accidents, too.
Workplace Accidents

Most about of the accidents in the workplace are brought about by

exposure to machineries, poisonous substances, and industrial
products which are bad for the health. The dangers may be caused
by unsafe condition of the workers, poor management of work
materials, falls, and by not using protective gadgets. A disorderly
workplace also plays a big role in accidents.
causes of accidents
1. Lack of knowledge and skills
2. Wrong attitude and practices
3. Poor condition of body and mind
4. Environmental dangers
5. Emotional pressure
6. Wrong beliefs
Lack of Knowledge

Little knowledge or ignorance is

dangerous. For example, most
people know the danger in
contacting electric current. Many
people, however, do not
understand the danger of holding
plugged cords while standing on
wet floors, which could be a
cause of an accident or of death.
Lack of Skills

Accidents could happen to

people, most especially children,
who do things beyond their
capacity. For example, some
children are allowed to go biking
along even if they do not know
how to ride a bike. Also, a person
is left alone driving a car even if
he or she does not understand
fully well road and traffic
regulations.
Wrong Attitude and Practices

Accidents commonly happen because of carelessness, curiosity,

discourtesy, and procrastination. For example, there are people who
smoke in bed, people who cross the street when the traffic light is
green, and some parents who put matches and medicines within
children's reach. Another accidents-prone practice is putting aside the
repair or fixing of broken things in the house until they cause an
accidents.
Poor Coordination of the Parts of the Body

Poor coordination of body parts, like the feet and the hands of children
and adults, and being sickly could be causes of accidents. Unbalanced
body movement and being underweight could cause falls. Poor
eyesight or hearing, exhaustion, dizziness, senility, and intoxication
could also expose one to accidents. For example, drinking wine affects
driving skills. Drunk people become dangerous drivers in the street.
Emotional Pressure

Emotional pressure due to big

surprise, anger, dizziness, and
anxiety could be a cause of
accidents. Ordinarily, this condition
leads to negligence,aggressiveness,
diverting one's attention from what
should be done. For example,
coming from a heated argument at
home, a man drives a car while still
angry, then he could be a cause of
serious accident on the road.
Environmental Dangers
Bad weather is one of the many causes of accidents. The occurrence of
typhoons, earthquakes, floods, and volcanic eruptions; living near cliffs, a
very deep sea or river, or in lowlands; and staying in poorly constructed
high buildings are some of the common causes of environmental
accidents. Also, living in crowded, not peaceful, dark, and dirty places
could mean courting accidents. For example, constructing a house in a
place where the land is low or near the mountain or where it gets flooded
could lead to accidents when the area hit by strong typhoon or an
earthquake.
prevention of accidents
To prevent accidents, think of safety. Be knowledgeable
and skillful about safety measures whether at home, in school,
or in the community for prevention and control of any injury.
Home Safety
Almost 50% of accidents that happen at home are due to fall,
fires, and poisoning. Falls occur often on stairways, in slippery
bathrooms, or on wet floors. If you have stairs at home, keep them
free from toys and other objects at all times. Keep stairs lighted and in
good condition.
The home accident that has caused much loss and
destruction is fire. This may be due to smoking in bed, children
playing with matches, handling of electrical appliances, and leaking
gas stoves. Fires could be avoided by using electric appliances
properly. Prevent the children from touching or playing electric wires.
Always clean cooking stoves to find out if there is a leak. Keep tank
regulators closed when not in use. Avoid smoking in bed and throwing
cigarette butts anywhere in the house.
Poisoning is an accident common among the younger children
who are normally inquisitive. They are in the stage where they explore
by putting inside their mouth. There are also children who suffer from
overdose of medicine after taking too much of candy-flavored tablets.
To prevent accidental poisoning, all medicines and poisons must be
properly labeled and stored in locked cabinets.
Remember that a clean and orderly house is important for the
health and safety of a person. A disorderly house and wrong attitude
and practices are the main causes of accidents at home. Also,
remember that people who have self-respect take care of their houses
like the way they take care of themselves.
School Safety
Accidents in school could be avoided by having an orderly
and safe building, playground, and furniture. A school should be
located away from unsafe and crowded places. Safety precautions
and correct practices should be followed in the gymnasium,
science laboratory, home arts, shop, auditorium, stairways, and
classrooms. Safety practices, like fire and earthquake drills, are
necessary not only school but also at home.
Community Safety
Safety in the community is an everyday responsibility of the
citizens. Safety rules are important to protect the citizens from
accidents. Traffic rules should be imposed and followed. Traffic lights
and traffic policemen should be followed. Traffic lights have colors that
give warnings: RED means STOP, while YELLOW means WARNING
because signals are about to change, and the GREEN means GO.
Typhoon signals and warnings about flood should also given attention.
These signals should be observed to prevent accidents.
Public health authorities investigate dining places, like
restaurant and other commercial houses, to protect the health of
the citizens. Water, air, and noise pollution are also being
monitored. The danger caused by canals, garbage, manholes, and
other openings are rules in the community. Remember, knowledge
about accidents is a part of a safety code.
On the other hand, a person's attitude and readiness in the
use of safety measures with understanding are also important.
Avoiding accidents will be effective if consciousness for
everybody's safety is kept everyday. Self discipline will be
developed and there will be unity in having a good life.
