MUMMIFYING AGENTS
Mummifying agents are those agents used to
harden and dry the soft tissues of pulp and root canal.
Have Antiseptic, Astringent, preservative property.
Previously, used during root canal treatment to kill tissues
of pulp so that there’s no infection later.
Not used much due to advanced pulpectomy, RCT by
gutta percha.
Can still be used when devitalized pulp and content of
root canal can’t be removed.
AGENTS USED:

1. Formaldehyde/Paraformaldehyde + Zinc oxide/Zinc sulphate+ creosote:


-Paste form and filled
2. Iodoform + Phenol + Glycerine:
-To improve smell: Eugenol and cinnamon oil
3. Tannic acid:
-Alone or used with combination of iodine+glycerine
4. Cresol:
-Combined with Thymol, Zinc oxide
MOA:

Formaldehyde/phenol/tannic acid

Destroys the pulp tissue and hardens it.

Resistant to future infection.


ADVERSE 1. Systemic toxicity possibility.
EFFECTS 2. Retain of dead pulp tissue.
3. Chance of future infection/inflammation.
