TYPES OF READING
EXTENSIVE READING

INTENSIVE READING

SKIMMING

SCANNING
EXTENSIVE READING
Extensive reading is one of the methods of
reading that people use for relaxation and pleasure.
Adopt this method when the purpose is to enjoy the
reading experience. It places no burden upon the
reader and due to its indulgent nature, it is seldom
used if the text isn’t enjoyable.
INTENSIVE READING
Among the different types of reading skills,
intensive reading is used when you want to read
carefully by paying complete attention to understand
every word of the text. It is where you would examine
and decipher each unfamiliar word or expression.
SCANNING
It is one of those kinds of reading where you
read to search for a particular piece of information.
Your eyes quickly skim over the sentences until you
find it.
SKIMMING
Through this method, you try to understand the
text in short. Though one saves a lot of time through
this method, one will gain only a shallow
understanding of the text.
Skimming is a great way to get a broad idea of
the topic being discussed. This method is generally
used to judge whether the information is useful or not.
LEVELS OF COMPREHENSION
LITERAL

INTERPRETATIVE

APPLIED
LITERAL (First Level)
It involves identifying the important and
essential information. Basically involves only the basic
information/ details and is surface understanding only.
INTERPRETATIVE (Second Level)

The focus shifts from to reading between the

lines at what is implied in the reading material. It
requires students to combine pieces of information in
order to make inferences from what was learned.
APPLIED (Third Level)
Understandings at the literal and interpretative
level are combined, reorganized and restructured at
the applied level to express opinions and draw new
insights and ideas.

TIPS AND TRICKS IN ACING THE
READING COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS
DO NOT OVER EMPHASIZE THINGS

Details are important but DON'T be obsessed

with examples, illustrations and so on. You just need
to get a hang of the main point and not the examples.
Comprehending the overall flow and structure will help
you analyze and answer the questions.
DO NOT READ THE PASSAGE FIRST

Always go through the questions first and then

the passage. This will prepare you to focus on the
things you need to look in the passage. Focus only on
the questions, and not on a particular answer option.
A quick overview of the questions is sufficient.
DO NOT OVER-EMPHASIZE ON
VOCABULARY SKILLS
Having a strong vocabulary is great however
having Shakespearean vocabulary will not prevent
you from understanding the passage. So do not put
yourself under stress in this area, and while reading
the passage, make sure that you understand the gist
of the passage and do not get stuck on particular
words.
DO NOT SPEND TIME ON PASSAGES
YOU CANNOT COMPREHEND AT FIRST
At times we come across a passage that we are
not able to comprehend. If you are struggling with one
such passage in the exam, make sure you have the
patience to avoid such a passage. Focus on the ones
that you can manage easily. Go back to the tricky
passage in case of absolute necessity.
DO NOT RELY ON TRIGGER WORDS

You might get trapped in the web of 'trigger

words' if you don’t read attentively through the
passage. A passage may focus on one point for quite
a bit of sentences and then change it towards the end
with trigger words like 'but' or 'however'.
TRY TO THINK OF POSSIBLE
QUESTIONS
While reading the passage, try to identify the
possible questions that could be asked, and which
parts of the passage seem the most likely candidates
for question-setting.
OPENING AND CLOSING PARAGRAPHS
REQUIRES EXTRA FOCUS
Questions such as the main idea question are
based on the overall subject of the passage, and
majority of the times the answer for this question type
lies in the first and last paragraph of the passage.
CONSTRANTLY QUESTION YOURSELF
WHILE READING THE PASSAGE
In order to maintain your concentration while
reading, make sure that some basic questions keep
playing at the back of your mind.
