SSD Technical Comm

The document discusses solid state drives (SSDs), providing definitions, background, functions, principles of operation, major parts, and descriptions. SSDs utilize NAND flash memory and controllers to store and access data faster than traditional hard disk drives through electrical read/write operations without mechanical parts. Key components include NAND flash memory chips, a controller, cache, and interface connectors. [END SUMMARY]

INTRODUCTI
ON
Purpose: To provide a detailed
understanding of Solid-State Drives
(SSD), a critical component in modern
computing.

Definition: An SSD is a semiconductor-

based storage device that utilizes the
technology of NAND flash memory
(IBM).
Background and Function
Background
● Flash-memory based SSDs introduced by WD in 1989 (Wu & Boyya, 2015).
● Started replacing HDDs because of greater speed and reliability (IBM).

Function
● Data Storage
● Faster Access
● Energy Efficiency
● Durability
● Silent Operation
(Persaud, 2018)
PRINCIPLE OF
OPERATION

LIST OF MAJOR
PARTS
NAND Flash Memory
● Composed of cells
organized in a grid (IBM).
● Retains data without a
constant power supply
(IBM).
● 4 types: SLC, MLC, TLC,
and QLC (IBM).
● Fast read-write (IBM).
LIST OF MAJOR
PARTS
Controller Chip
● Controls the reading and
writing of data to NAND
flash memory (IBM).
● Performs wear levelling
(IBM).
● Implements error correction
code (IBM).
● Fast read-write (IBM).
LIST OF MAJOR
PARTS
Interface Connectors
● 2 types: SATA and NVMe
(Persaud, 2018).
● SATA: Widely used, offers
good performance for
general computer needs
(Persaud, 2018).
● NVMe: Faster, more
efficient, utilizes PCLe lanes
(Persaud, 2018).
LIST OF MAJOR
PARTS
Cache Chip
● Acts as a buffer for fast data
access (Persaud, 2018).
● Reduces the number of
write cycles to the NAND
(Persaud, 2018).

Logic Board
● Hosts all the critical
components of an SSD
(Persaud, 2018).
OPERATING
DESCRIPTION
● Data Management: Coordinates data storage and retrieval between
the computer and NAND flash memory (Wu & Buyya, 2015).
● Fast Processes: Rapidly reads and writes data using electrical
signals, enhanced by the cache chip (Wu & Buyya, 2015).
● Efficient Operation: Controller optimizes data placement and error
correction, ensuring speed and reliability (Wu & Buyya, 2015).
● Power Backup: Capacitors maintain data integrity during power
fluctuations (Wu & Buyya, 2015).
