HEAVY WEIGHT CONCRETE
DEFINITION:
The concrete which has substantially higher mass per unit
volume then the concrete made of ordinary ingredients is
called heavy weight concrete. The aggregates used are
higher in weight. OR
Concrete in which heavy aggregates such as magnetite
and iron are used to increase the density of concrete and
protection against radiations.
• It is also called as high density concrete because of its
higher density.
• The unit weight of HWC is about 50% higher than the unit
weight of normal concrete.
• HWC density is more then 2600Kg/m3.
HEAVY WEIGHT CONCRETE
COMPOSITION:
• Water and cement(main components for each concrete).
• Higher density aggregates.
• HWC are made by using
aggregates of specific gravity
more than 3.5.
1) Natural minerals aggregates
such as barites or magnetite.
2)Manufactured Steel and Iron
aggregates are also used to make Fig: barites aggregates
HWC.
HEAVY WEIGHT CONCRETE
PROPERTIES OF HWC:
1. Resistive to highly penetrating radiation.
2. Its density varies from 3360 kg/m3 to 3840 kg/m3 in general.
However concrete of densities up to 5280 kg/m3
can also be produced.
3. HWC bears a temperature of many hundreds oc.
4. It has more tendency to segregation due to high weight of
aggregates.
HEAVY WEIGHT CONCRETE
USES OF HWC :
1. HWC is used in construction of nuclear plants.
2. It is also used in construction of x-rays laboratories.
3. It is also used in major hospitals all over the world
where cancer treatment is carried out.
4.Also used in counter weights.
5. For balancing weight, stabilization heavy weight concrete
is used.
6. Application in which high mass to volume ratio is required.
7. It might be useful to attenuate vibration and sound.
8. Concrete weight coating for underwater pipelines.
