Past tense
Definition

 The Past Simple tense, also called the Simple Past, is used for past actions
that happened either at a specific time, which can either be given by a time
phrase (yesterday, last year, etc.) or understood from the context. Regular
Verbs add -ed to the base form, or -d if the verbs ends with -e. Irregular verbs
can change in many different ways. The verb form is the same for all persons:
Grammatical structure

 Positive form
Subject + Past simple verb

Negative form
Subject + did NOT + Verb

Question form
Did + Subject + Verb + ?

Examples

 I washed the dishes yesterday

 Task 1 - Put the verbs in the brackets into Simple Past Tense.

Present simple vs past simple
 We use the present form for fixed events in the future (these things can’t be changed). The speaker
often says when they happen.

E.g.
The meeting starts at 10:30.
The game isn’t on Sunday.
When does the bus leave?

 We use the past form for events in the past (the past can’t be changed). We say or know when they
happened.

E.g.
The meeting started at 10:30.
The game wasn’t on Sunday.
When did the bus leave?
