WHAT IS A FESTIVAL DANCE?

Festival dances are cultural dances performed to
the strong beats of percussion instruments by a
community of people sharing the same culture
usually done in honor of a Patron Saint or in


thanksgiving of a bountiful harvest.
Festival dances may be religious or
secular in nature.

They add to the merry-making and
festivities where they are celebrated,
the reason why they are called
festival dances.
Festival dances draw the people's
culture by portraying the people's
ways of life through movements,
costumes, and implements inherent
to their place of origin. 12
WHY FESTIVAL?

Filipinos do festivals primarily to celebrate. There is a multitude of reasons for


this. We celebrate our unity amidst the diversity of cultures and we celebrate our
industry bringing about a bountiful harvest.

Festivals have been a consistent crowd-producing activity leading to the


upliftment of a community's economy due to their tourism and entertainment
value.

Basically, festivals are forms of entertainment that attract foreign and domestic
tourists to visit a place. Eventually, leading to the elevation of Filipino's quality
of life.

The Ati-Atihan Festival is a
Philippine festival held annually in

January in honor of the Santo Niño
(Holy Child or Infant Jesus) in

Aklan, Panay Island.
The biggest celebration is held
during the third Sunday of January
in the town of Kalibo, the province's
capital. The name Ati-Atihan means
"to imitate the Ati people".

SECULAR FESTIVAL
BAMBANTI FESTIVAL
Bambanti Festival “bambanti” is
the Ilocano word for “scarecrow”.

The province of Isabela celebrates


the farmer's helpers known in the
province as bambanti – with a
festival every fourth week of
January. The Bambanti is the
ultimate symbol of the diligence,
vigilance and resilience of the
people of Isabela. 27
BANGUS FESTIVAL
The Bangus Festival is a ten-day
celebration taking place in
Dagupan City every April.

Dagupan City which is known as


the “Bangus Capital” of the
Philippines celebrates its annual
Bangus Festival which features
bangusine (bangus cuisine), street
dancing, bangus grill, deboning,
day and night variety shows, etc.

Mammangi is an Ybanag
word for harvesting or
planting corn, the city's main
agricultural crop aside from
palay.

MANGO FESTIVAL
The Dinamulag Festival also known as
the Zambales Mango Festival is an
annual festival held in the province of
Zambales in the Philippines to
celebrate or encourage bountiful
harvest of the province's mangoes. The
festival was first held in 1999.
The yearly event is held in April and
brings together locals and foreigners
alike to savor and promote the island's
best mangoes.

ANAGBENGA FESTIVAL
Panagbenga is an annual flower
festival celebrated every February
which takes place in Baguio City,
Philippines. The term “Panagbenga”
comes from a Kankanaey term
meaning “season of blooming”. This
festival reflects the history, traditions
and values of Baguio and the
Cordilleras.

It run for 5 weeks starting February


until the first week of March.

IBON-EBON FESTIVAL
Ibon-Ebon festival, also called “Birds
and Eggs Festival,” is a celebration
held during the first and second days of
February in Candaba, Pampanga. It
was first celebrated on February 1 and
2 in 1998 and has been running
successfully up to now. This festival is
also a celebration for another year of
bountiful harvest.

migratory birds that visit the town

MASSKARA FESTIVAL
The MassKara Festival is an
annual festival held in Bacolod,
Philippines, culminating on the
fourth Sunday in October. The
smiling masks used in the
festival were a declaration of
Bacolod locals' resilience in the
face of challenges and tragedy,
prompting the city to become
known as the “City of Smiles.” 33
T’NALAK FESTIVAL
The Festival is celebrated in the
city of Koronadal, Mindanao,
every year in July. It is a week-
long festival that fosters
diversity and unification of the
variety of ethnicities and
cultures on the island. The

Grand Ammungan Festival, also
known as Ammungan Festival, is a
founding anniversary and cultural
festival of the province of Nueva
Vizcaya, Philippines held every May
24.
It aims to bolster the local tourism
industry by showcasing what the
province can offer in terms of
accommodation, tourist activities,
eco-tourism, and scenic locations.

BINATBATAN FESTIVAL
"Binatbatan Festival traces its roots
from the abel weaving industry of
Vigan which has been in existence
even before the Spaniards came to
colonize the Philippines.“ It is
celebrated every May.
