Balkan lynx

Alexandra Chavdarova and Kamelia Dimitrova 11g

predator in Europe, Balkan region
and in Albania after brown bear
and wolf. Body mass of adults
ranges between 18-25 kg and it
lives 17-25 years. Total body
length is 80-130 cm and 60-75 cm
in height. The appearance of the
lynx is very characteristic. It has
long legs and large feed, a round
head with a short neck, triangular
ears with black tufts and a short
black-tipped tail. The claws are
sharp, strong, hooked and
retractile.
Habitat and status
• The lynx inhabits forested areas in the most of its
range. Lynx are solitary animals, except for females
and the young of the year. Both males and females
occupy individual home range, which they mark
with gland secretions. The home range of the
females are larger than females. Distances traveled
by lynx per night ranged from 1-45 km.
• Balkan lynx is mainly threatened by illegal hunting,
forest logging and degradation and lack of prey.
Threats
•he most serious threats to the Balkan lynx
are the low population size,
habitat degradation, and poaching. [1]
Poaching affects the Balkan lynxes both
directly and indirectly. Hunters that hunt the
small wildlife and game indirectly harm the
Balkan lynxes by restricting their source of
food, such as roe deer, chamois, and hares. It
is illegal to hunt Balkan lynxes but there has
been evidence that there is a market for
Balkan lynx fur. [1] Also, some stuffed lynxes
are seen as decorations in some restaurants in
the countryside of Albania and North
Macedonia. [1]
Mating
• Mating season is from February to mid-April. Oestrus
lasts for three days. Male and female often feed together
during this time.[19]
• Litters can be anywhere from one to five kittens, with an
average of two to three kittens. A newborn lynx weighs
about 300 grams. At three months, kittens begin
following the mother out of the rock cave den to eat
meat from her kills. At ten months, usually around
March or April, kittens leave their mothers to be
independent.[20]
Conservation
• The Balkan lynx is considered a critically endangered
subspecies by the
International Union for Conservation of Nature
(IUCN) and is the highest risk category for
endangered species. The Balkan lynx is also protected
under the
Convention for International Trade of Endangered Sp
ecies
(CITIES) by Appendix II, the Bern Convention by
Appendix III, the EU Habitats and Species Directive
by Annexes II and IV, as well as all range countries. [1]
• A three-year program called the Balkan Lynx
Recovery Programme (BLRP) was started in 2006 to
combine the protection for lynxes and their habitats in
Albania and North Macedonia. Sponsored by the
Swiss-based MAVA Foundation, the goals of the
program was to survey and monitor the lynx
population, gathering data of their distribution,
population tendencies, habitation.
