The Issue of Secularization

During the Spanish colonization period in the Philippines,
there were two classifications of priests, the Regular and
the Secular Priests.
Two Types of Priests

Archbishop Basilio Santa Justa used Royal Decree of
November 9,1774 in ordaining the Filipino secular priests


and installing them in the parishes.
The regular Spanish priest protested the moved of
Archbishop Justa. According to them Filipino priests must
not be given parish assignments because of their color of
skin and lack of education.

Father Pedro Pelaez- organized a movement that
asked equal rights for Filipino priests

Father Jose Burgos- appealed to Spanish throne
and Rome to return the parishes which the Spanish
government have taken from them and had given
back to the Spanish friars.

Father Mariano Gomez- organized the Filipino
clergy towards raising funds to be used in
defending the cause of the secularization

Father Jacinto Zamora- celebrated a high mass
scheduled to be officiated by a Franciscan priest.

Cavite Mutiny – January 20,1872
Cause:
-- Governor-General Izquierdo abolished Cavite soldiers

and workers priviledge not to pay tributes and by
exempted from polo ‘y servicious
-- they revolted againts the governor-general
Result:
-- January 21, 1872- Mutineers were captured, some
were put to jail and others sentenced to death

The Execution of the Three Priests (February 17, 1872)
Cause:
-- The three priests (GomBurZa) were implicated in the Cavite Mutiny as
the mastermind so they were charge of treason and sedition in the
Spanaish military
tribunal. 
-- The three priests were publictly executed by garrote in Bagumabayan
on February 17, 1872.
Result:
-- Many believed that this was the beginning of Philippine nationalism.
Dr. Jose Rizal dedicated his second novel El Filibusterismo to the three
priests

The Propaganda Movement
-- is a peaceful organization composed of Filipinos who have gone and
studied in Spain to voice out the sentiments for reforms in the
Philippines

-- The movement was led by Dr. Jose Rizal, Graciano Lopez-Jaena and
Marcelo del Pilar
-- The propagandists used thier written works and speeches to call the
attention of the Spaniards in Spain regarding the deplorable conditions
of the Philippines.
-- They established the newspaper “La Solidaridad”

The La Liga Filipina (July 3, 1892)
Cause:
-- Lack of unity among propagandists in Spain, Dr. Jose Rizal decided
to go back to the Philippines

-- On the night of July 3, 1892, Dr. Jose Rizal established La Liga
Filipina at the house of Doroteo Ongjunco on Calle Ilaya, Tondo.
Result:
-- Dr Jose Rizal was arrested and exiled to Dapitan, Zamboanga, the
arrest of Dr. Jose Rizal made the organization to slowly weakened and
later on, it died in a natural death.
