The document discusses different types of auxiliary memory including magnetic memory like hard disks and magnetic tapes as well as optical disks like CDs, DVDs, and their working. It explains that auxiliary memory is used to overcome limitations of primary storage and provides permanent and large storage. Magnetic memory uses magnetic coating for data storage while optical disks use lasers and reflectivity of coating for reading and writing data.

Kenin sakhiya Anjali Rajput Content What is auxiliary memory? • Magnetic memory - Magnetic Disks: Hard Disks and Floppy Disks - Magnetic Tapes • Optical disks - CD (Compact Disk) or CD-ROM - CD-RW (CD-Read/Write) - DVD (Digital Versatile Disk) -ROM - DVD-R What is Auxiliary memory? • Used to overcome the limitations of primary storage. • Unlimited capacity because the cost per bit of storage is very low. • Larger capacity than main memory. • Used to store large volumes of data on a permanent basis. • It is Non-volatile in nature. • Also known as Secondary Memory. Magnetic Memory • Permanent type memory. • Data can store on the magnetic coated surface by applying electric pulses. • Two techniques of data recording: Longitudinal and vertical. • Magnetoresistive(MR) sensor is used to read data. Magnetic Disk
•Read/Write data from/to its surface
on platters. • Surface divided into tracks and sectors. • Supports direct access mechanism. • Has a disk controller. • Has read/write head. Types Of Magnetic Disk:- Hard Disks
• On line storage devices.
• Used to store bulk (mass) amount of information. • Made up of aluminium with a thin coating of magnetic material (iron oxide). • Size 3.5 inch used in desktop computers. • Size 2.5 inch used in portable computers. Access Mechanism of Hard Disk Floppy Disk • Made up of plastic material (Mylar) coated with magnetic material (iron oxide or barium ferrite).
• Not a hard plate, very thin piece of flexible plastic.
• Also called diskette.
• It is removable type device and used as backup storage device.
• 5¼ inch Diskette • 3½ inch Diskette
(Minifloppy) (Microfloppy) - Encased in square, - Encased in square, hard flexible vinyl jacket. plastic jacket. - 1.2 MB size. 1.44 MB size. Magnetic Tapes:- • Used as backup memory. • Sequential access device. • Made up of flexible polyester coated with magnetizable material (iron oxide or chromium oxide). • Size varies from 3 mm to 12.7 mm. • Available in real, cartridge and cassette form. Optical Disks • Used for backup memory. • Circular disk, coated with a thin metal or some other material that is highly reflective. • Read/Write operation can perform using laser beam. • Has very high storing capacity, compares to magnetic floppy disks. • Direct access device. Storage Organization in Optical Disk:-
• Has one long spiral track.
• Track divided into equal length sectors.
Access Mechanism Of Optical Disk An optical disk drive uses a laser beam to read the data from the disk as it is spinning. It distinguishes between the pits and lands based on how the light reflects off the recording material. The drive uses the differences in reflectivity to determine the 0 and 1 bits that represent the data. Types Of Optical Disk 1) CD or CD-ROM:-
CD-ROM (Compact Disc Read-Only Memory) is a Compact Disc that
contains data accessible with the help of the computer. Compact Disc format was only designed for music and playback music but later made to store all kinds of data.
2) CD -R:-
A CD-R (Compact Disc-Recordable) is a multi-session compact disc onto
which you can record your own items such as text, graphics, and audio. With a CD-R, you can write on one part of the disc at one time and another part later. 3) CD-RW:-
A CD-RW (Compact Disc-Rewritable) is an erasable disc that allows you to write
multiple times. Initially, called an erasable CD (CD E), a CD-RW overcomes the major disadvantage of CD-R discs, of writing on them only once with CD-RW, the disc acts like a floppy or hard disk, allowing you to write and rewrite data, instructions, and information onto it multiple times. To write on a CD-RW disc, you have CD-RW software and a CD-RW drive.
4)DVD:-
A DVD-ROM (Digital Versatile Disc-Read-Only Memory or Digital Video Disc
Read-Only Memory) is known as a high-capacity optical disc on which users can easily read but not able to write or erase. DVD-ROMs store movies, music, music videos, huge databases, and software. Difference Between Magnetic and Optical Disk:- THANK YOU
