Software
Software comprises the entire set of
programs, procedures, and routines
associated with the operation of a computer
system.
Consist of the instructions that tell the
computer how to perform a task
Software is the general term for various
kinds of programs used to operate and
manipulate computers and their peripheral
devices.
Types of Software
Two types of software are:
System Software - is a type of computer
program that is designed to run a
computer's hardware and application
programs.
Application Software - Application
software consists of programs designed to
make users more productive and/or assist
them with personal tasks.
Software major types
Application Software
 Application software has a variety of uses:
◦ To make business activities more efficient
◦ To assist with graphics and multimedia projects
◦ To support home, personal, and educational tasks
◦ To facilitate communications
Most application software is designed to run
on three popular platforms: desktops, mobile
devices, and browsers.
General Purpose Software
AKA Off-the-shelf software (COTS)
are programs that perform common
information processing jobs for end users
they significantly increase the productivity
of end users, they are sometimes known as
productivity packages.
used for a variety of tasks. It is not limited
to one particular function. They provide
large number of features for its users.
Specific Purpose Software
AKA custom, tailor-made, bespoke
Software that support specific applications of
end users in business and other fields
They perform specific requested functions
and may contain borrowed features from off-
the-shelf applications.
Overall, they are meant to maximize
productivity and provide cordial interfaces for
users while cutting out the excess features of
general purpose software.
Software Suites and integrated
packages – most common used packages
come bundled together
Web Applications* - Web apps can be
installed to run on web browsers. Can
host or launch applications. (Web site that
allows users to access and interact with
software from any computer or device
that is connected to the Internet)
Groupware - is software that helps
workgroups and teams collaborate to
accomplish group assignments. Is a
category of general-purpose application
software that combines a variety of
software features and functions to
facilitate collaboration.
Cloud Computing* - is a style of
computing in which software and, in some
cases, virtualized hardware resources are
provided as a service over the Internet.
Simply put, cloud computing is the delivery
of computing services—including servers,
storage, databases, networking, software,
analytics, and intelligence—over the Internet
(“the cloud”) to offer faster innovation,
flexible resources, and economies of scale.
