BUILDING SITE AND

ORIENTATION
BUILDING TYPES
BUILDING SITE ORIENTATION
• When designing and building a new house or
building it is important to understand how
location site and orientation of your home will
affect.
• A construction orientation is a critical first step
towards ensuring everyone works safely while
on site giving them the important information
about hazards, safety risks, procedures,
policies and all site specific information that
they need to know about the specific
construction site they are working at.
Building Design
• The term Building Types means or refers to the functional
factors in architecture. Buildings are built for practical use
(commoditas or utility). There are many types of buildings:

• Residential Buildings
• Institutional Buildings
• Commercial Buildings
• Educational Buildings
• Agricultural Buildings
• Infrastructure
Residential Buildings:

• A residential building is defined as the building

which provides more than half of its floor area
for dwelling purposes. In other words, residential
building provides sleeping accommodation with
or without cooking or dining or both facilities.
The types of residential buildings are individual
houses or private dwellings, lodging or rooming
houses, dormitories, apartments and hotels.
Example of Residential Building:
Institutional Buildings

• Institutional building simply refers to any structure

that fulfills a role related to healthcare, education,
recreation, or public works. Construction services
teams that specialize in this type of work build
everything from hospitals and elementary schools
to athletic facilities and university buildings. In
other words, institutional construction
encompasses many of the buildings that matter
most in the community.
Institutional Buildings:
Commercial Building:

Commercial buildings are buildings where commercial
activities take place. Commercial buildings include office
buildings, retail space, warehouses and more. This differs
somewhat from commercial property, which also includes
multi-family buildings like apartment buildings. The reason for
this is that commercial buildings are where commerce
happens, while commercial property earns money for its
owners but doesn't have to have commerce happening in it.
Multi-use buildings that have a mix of spaces, such as a retail
area and apartments, can still be considered commercial in
certain circumstances.
Commercial Building:
Educational Buildings:

• Educational building means an establishment

providing academic and/or technical
instruction and may include supplementary
school cafeterias, book stores, amusement
activities, recreation facilities, instruction
function, and community assembly use. This
term refers to uses such as public and private
schools and community colleges
Educational Buildings:
Agricultural building:

• Agricultural building means any building or

structure customarily used in connection with
a farm other than a residence. Agricultural
building means a structure designed and
constructed to store farm implements or hay,
grain, poultry, livestock, fruit, and other
agricultural products.
Agricultural building:
Infrastructure:

• Infrastructure is the set of fundamental facilities and systems that

support the sustainable functionality of households and firms.
Serving a country, city, or other area, including the services and
facilities necessary for its economy to function. Infrastructure is
composed of public and private physical structures such as roads,
railways, bridges, tunnels, water supply, sewers, electrical grids,
and telecommunications (including Internet connectivity and
broadband access). In general, infrastructure has been defined as
“the physical components of interrelated systems providing
commodities and services essential to enable, sustain, or enhance
societal living conditions” and maintain the surrounding
environment.
