Measures of
Central
Tendency
Central Tendency a single value that is used to
describe a data or the center of the data.

MEAN MEDIAN MODE

MEAN
• It is also called the ARITHMETIC MEAN or
AVERAGE.
• It is most frequency used in central tendency.

PROPERTIES OF MEAN
• A set of data has only one mean.
• Mean can be used for interval and ratio data.
• All values in the data are included in
set computing the mean.
• Mean is very useful in comparing two or more
data set.
• It is affected by OUTLIERS.
• It cannot be computed the datain
for distribution a an open-
frequency with ended
class.

𝑋  arithmetic mean mean

∑𝑋  Sum of all scores/cases/data

N  total no. of scores/cases/data.
Example
The scores of 15 students in a quiz.
8 10 10 5 8 5 10 11

Exercises
Find the mean
1.) 7, 9, 10, 8, 20,18, 19, 16 and 13 (ODD GROUP)
2.) 6, 7, 8, 10, 5, 4, 11 ,12, 11, 10, 8, and 7 (EVEN GROUP)

3.) In a certain shopping mall, restaurant charge P125,

P150, P200, P165, P175, P190, P230 and P180 for
a
regular dinner. (ALL GROUPS)
Central Tendency a single value that is used to
describe a data or the center of the data.

MEAN MEDIAN MODE

MEDIAN
• It is the midpoint of the data set/ middle
scores or the 50th percentile.
PROPERTIES OF THEMEDIAN
• It is unique
• It is not affected by OUTLIERS
• It can be computed for an-open ended
frequency distribution
• It can be used in ordinal, interval and ratio data.
MEDIAN of UNGROUPED DATA
To determine the value of median for
ungrouped we need to consider two rules:
1. If n is odd , the median is the middle ranked.

2. If n is even , then the median is the average of

two middle ranked values.
𝒏+ 𝟏 n – sample or

Example 1.) 17, 16, 15, 10, 19, 5, and 2

19, 17, 16, 15, 10, 5, 2

n  77 (It is
odd)

Central Tendency a single value that is used to
describe a data or the center of the data.

MEAN MEDIAN MODE

MODE

• It is the most frequent score/data in the

in the distribution.
Properties of Mode
• It can be used qualitative and
quantitative data.
• It may not be unique.
• It may not affected by OUTLIERS.
