MACBETH

ACT 1 SCENE 2
• King Duncan and his 2 sons (Malcolm and
Donalbain) meet a wounded soldier and Ross (young
Thane) arrives to report that the King of Norway
(Sweno) and the Thane of Cawdor have just been
defeated.
• Setting: army camp near Forres (King Duncan’s
home). WHAT
• BATTLE: fought between Duncan’s army,
commanded by Macbeth and the rebels commanded HAPPENS IN
by Macdonwald.
• The rebel army is helped by the King of Norway who
THIS SCENE?
has just supplied fresh soldiers for another attack.
• Soldier is taken away so that his wounds can be
treated; then appears Ross with the news that the
King of Norway and another rebel, the Thane of
Cawdor, have just been defeated.

• Duncan rewards Macbeth by bestowing the title of
Thane of Cawdor upon him.
• The message here is clear: disloyalty is punished by
death while loyalty is rewarded.
• THREE people have worked together to overthrow
King Duncan/Scotland:

HOW IS • The traitor: Macdonwald assisted Irish mercenaries


– he is killed by Macbeth and his forces fled.
MACBETH • Sweno – King of Norway – he is forced to negotiate
REWARDED? a peaceful settlement, paid a large sum of money,to
be disributed amongst the soldiers themselves.
• Thane of Cawdor, another traitor, seems to have
assisted both Mcdonwald and and the King of
Norway.
• However, Macbeth and Banquo have no knowledge
of his role in the battles and his execution is ordered
by Duncan.
THEMES THAT ARE EVIDENT?
• Good vs evil: Duncan (king), Macduff (Thane), Banquo
(general in the army) and Malcolm (Duncan’s son) represent
good.
• Macbeth, Lady Macbeth and the witches represent evil.
• Ambition: even though Macbeth has been rewarded for his
bravery on the battlefield, he allows his blind ambition to
overpower his moral conscience when he kills Duncan.
