GENERAL INFORMATION AND
POPULATION
 Bratislava is historically known as
Pressburg.
 Population: about 475,000.
 Is the biggest city in Slovakia and

administrative, cultural and economic


centre of the country.
LOCATION
 Bratislava is in southwestern Slovakia at the
foot of the Little Carpathians, occupying
both banks of the River Danube and the left
bank of the River Morava.
 Bordering Austria and Hungary, it is the

only national capital to border


two sovereign states.
BOROUGHS
ECONOMY
 The Bratislava Region is the wealthiest and
most economically prosperous region in
Slovakia.
 Many governmental institutions and private

companies have their headquarters in


Bratislava.
LIFESTYLE
 On the one hand, in Bratislava, people often
live closer to the place where they work. But
on the other hand, there is sometimes
polluted air and smog above the city, people
live a busy and stressful life.
 Living in the countryside is friendlier, people

know each other. But there are few


possibilities of cultural life.

CULTURE
 Bratislava is the cultural heart of Slovakia.
 Owing to its historical multi-cultural character,
local culture is influenced by various ethnic and
religious groups, including Germans, Slovaks,
Hungarians, and Jews.
 Bratislava enjoys numerous theatres, museums,
galleries, concert halls, cinemas, film clubs, and
foreign cultural institutions.

Bratislava castle
 There are the greatest treasures of the
country‘s ancient history, such as the
Paleolithic Venus, gold Paleolithic jewellery,
Celtic coins, silver Roman dishes and
jewellery.
The Old Town Hall
 The oldest town hall on the territory of
Slovakia.
 Is also a museum today.
Primatial Palace
 The largest palace in the town.
 It is a gallery presenting Flemish and Italian

painter‘s of the 16th to 18th centuries.


Pálffy‘s Palace
 Exhibits baroque paintings of central Europe
and Slovak paintings from the 19th to 20th
centuries.
Grassalkovich Palace
 Currently, the palace is the residence of the
President of the Slovak Republic.
 Although the palace is normally closed to

visitors, the park behind it is freely accessible


to the public.
The Slovak National Gallery
 Is situated close to the River Danube.
 Inside the building, there are exhibitons of

Slovak art from the 12th century up to the


present day.
Michal Tower, Michal Gate
 Michal Tower, with its famous Michal Gate is the only
preserved part of the town fortifications.
 There are hardly any visitors to Bratislava who would not
pass through Michal Gate, which is the gate to the Old
Town.
 The exhibiton in Michal Tower describes the
battles which took place in Bratislava.
 Plans, arms and military kit of the time are
displayed there.
Devín Castle
 Is located at the foot of the cliff above the
confluence of the Danube and Morava.
 Is a great place for walking, not only because

of the historical monuments, but also


because of the beautiful nature that
surrounds it.
St. Martin‘s Dome
 Its interior is filled with a remarkable relief of
the Holy Trinity.
Slavín
 Is the final resting place of Soviet soldiers.

 Open air swimming pools: Zlaté piesky,
Senec.
 Castle: Červený kameň.
 Nature: Botanical garden, zoo, Koliba.

SPENDING FREE TIME IN
BRATISLAVA
 Aurelium - experience center of science.
 Jump Arena - children can jump on the

trampolines.
 Walking around the Old Town of Bratislava -

with its lovely cafes and bars sprinkled across


and a stunning town hall and tower in middle,
this square makes for picture perfect
postcards.
MY RECOMMENDATION
 If you like cats, I would highly recommend
you the Mackcafe (cat café) in Old Town.
 Very pleasant and quiet place in which you

can easily relax. Cats make a great


atmosphere. The service is very friendly and
kind.
