Effects of Applied Social

Science Processes
Lesson 15
Applied social sciences refer to the practical application of social
science theories, methods, and research findings to address real-world
issues and challenges in society. These disciplines focus on using
knowledge from fields such as sociology, psychology, anthropology,
economics, political science, and communication studies to understand
social, human behavior, and societal structures, and to
develophenomenap solutions that can improve the well-being of
individuals and communities.
The things we will discuss:

• Effects of Applied Social Sciences

• Awareness and Knowledge

• Attitude and Value Change

• Behavioral Change

• Structural Change
Applied social sciences have a wide range of effects on society, individuals, and various aspects of life.
Some possible effects of applied social sciences include:

• Policy Development: Applied social sciences, such as sociology, psychology, and

anthropology, provide valuable insights that can inform the development of social policies.
These disciplines help policymakers understand social issues, human behavior, and societal
trends, leading to more effective and evidence-based policy decisions.

• Social Change: Applied social sciences play a crucial role in driving social change by raising
awareness about social injustices, advocating for marginalized groups, and promoting equality
and diversity. Through research and activism, these disciplines contribute to creating a more just
and equitable society.

• Improved Services: Fields like social work, counseling, and public health, which are rooted in
applied social sciences, aim to improve the well-being of individuals and communities. By
applying theories and research findings, professionals in these fields can provide better services
and support to those in need.
• Conflict Resolution: Applied social sciences, including peace and conflict studies,
contribute to resolving conflicts at various levels, from interpersonal disputes to
international conflicts. By understanding the root causes of conflicts and promoting
dialogue and reconciliation, these disciplines help in fostering peace and stability.

• Community Development: Applied social sciences support community development

initiatives by identifying community needs, strengths, and resources. Through community
engagement, social scientists work with local residents to address social issues, enhance
social cohesion, and promote sustainable development.

• Health and Well-being: Fields like public health, social work, and behavioral science
focus on improving health outcomes and overall well-being. By studying factors that
influence health behaviors, mental health, and access to healthcare, these disciplines
contribute to enhancing the quality of life for individuals and populations.
• Education and Training: Applied social sciences inform educational
practices, curriculum development, and training programs. By
understanding how people learn, behave, and interact, educators can design
more effective teaching strategies and support systems to enhance learning
outcomes.

• Economic Development: Social sciences, such as economics and

sociology, play a role in understanding economic systems, market
dynamics, and social inequalities. By analyzing economic trends and social
structures, these disciplines contribute to promoting sustainable economic
development and reducing poverty.

Overall, the applied social sciences have a profound impact on society by addressing social issues,
promoting positive change, and enhancing the well-being of individuals and communities. Through
research, practice, and advocacy, social scientists contribute to building a more inclusive, equitable,
and thriving society.
Awareness and Knowledge

An important and immediate effect of Applied Social Sciences is the increase in

individuals' awareness and knowledge of how the world works, whether it is in the
domains of politics, culture, or the economy.

Education serves as a shared function across the three disciplines. The expertise and
competencies utilized by counselors and social workers to assist clients were obtained
through a comprehensive four-year educational program in their specific areas of
study. Education is fundamental in molding our comprehension, spanning from basic
notions to intricate concepts, and it is via this mechanism that we develop the
majority of our knowledge.
During the process of assisting clients, counselors and social workers fulfill their educational
role by utilizing various interventions to enhance the client's knowledge and awareness. One
essential intervention involves helping the client recognize their weaknesses or challenges, as
well as, importantly, their strengths and potential as individuals.

Understanding the available resources, including programs and services offered by public and
private organizations, is crucial. Social workers and counselors play a vital role in assisting
clients who may lack knowledge on how to approach and resolve their problems. This
empowerment process helps clients gain a better understanding of how to address their challenges
effectively.
Attitude and Value Change:

Attitude and value change in applied social sciences refer to the process of influencing and
modifying individuals' beliefs, perceptions, and behaviors towards social issues, norms, and
values. This aspect is essential in promoting positive social change, addressing social
inequalities, and fostering a more inclusive and equitable society.

• Attitude change involves altering individuals' attitudes, opinions, and emotions

towards specific social issues or behaviors. This can be achieved through education,
awareness campaigns, counseling, and interventions aimed at challenging existing
beliefs and promoting more positive and constructive attitudes.
• Value change, on the other hand, focuses on shifting individuals' core values,
principles, and ethical beliefs. Applied social sciences seek to promote values such as
empathy, social justice, equality, and respect for diversity. By encouraging individuals
to reflect on their values and consider alternative perspectives, practitioners in these
fields aim to cultivate a more ethical and socially responsible mindset.

In applied social sciences, changing attitudes and values plays a crucial role in
fostering social unity, combating bias and discrimination, and empowering
individuals to make constructive contributions to their communities. By
implementing specific strategies, providing education, and engaging in advocacy
efforts, professionals in the field aim to establish a more inclusive, empathetic, and
equitable society.
Behavioral Change:

Behavioral change in applied social sciences refers to the process of modifying

individuals' actions, habits, and responses to achieve desired outcomes and
address social issues. This aspect focuses on promoting positive behaviors,
reducing harmful behaviors, and encouraging individuals to adopt new ways of
thinking and acting that contribute to their well-being and the well-being of
society as a whole.
In lesson 14, it is mentioned that persuasion, arts, and entertainment are merely functions of
applied social sciences.
