IELTS LISTENING SECTION OVERVIEW

 Section 1: phone call/daily conversation such as applying for a


job/registering to an event.
 Section 2: general public explanation or description, such as tour
guiding/map description.
 Section 3: general campus conversation such as joining a
club/discussing assignment.
 Section 4: academic lecture or explanation such as lecture about
history, climate change, politics, etc.

Listening section 1 step by step

1. You have 30 seconds to read the


instruction and predict the expected
answers.
2. The listening starts. Listen attentively
and track which question is discussed in
the conversation.
3. Focus on the question discussed. Do a
‘cut loss’, skip them if you miss some
questions.
4. Take notes of the possible answers as
much as you can.
5. Decide which answer to write on answer
sheets later.
6. You have 30 seconds to review your
answer after the section finishes.
7. You can write the final answers on the
answer sheet after the fourth section
finishes.

PREDICTING: IDENTIFYING POSSIBLE ANSWERS AND THEIR WORD CLASS
(ADJECTIVE, NOUN, VERB)
1. Identify the theme of the conversation
2. Identify the keyword in each question.
3. Identify what is expected from the question.

Theme: Park Run

In question no. 1, the word ‘in front of’ indicates


that the answer most possibly is a place (noun) in a
park. Think of a place in a park suitable for a run.
The answer possibly is tree, fountain, lake, shop,
etc.

In question no. 2,the word ‘Time of start’ indicates


that the answer most possibly is a time (noun) for
a run in a park. Think of a suitable time to start a
run in a park. The answer possibly is 08 AM,
08.00, 09 AM, 09.00
IDENTIFYING PARAPHRASE For question no.1 you read

“Start of run: in front of the”

In listening you hear

“the run starts at the café (the answer)”

In order to prepare for the answer, listen to a talk


related to the place, such as when the speakers
say:

Man: “Do you know where the park is?”


Woman: “Oh yes. I’ve been there before, but it’s
quite big…”
Man: “There is a circular track…”

For question no.2, you read:


“Time of start”

In listening you hear:


“What time is the run?”
