AND ENGLISH GRADES OF SECONDARY


STUDENTS IN SAMPAO, INTEGRATED
SCHOOL
Background of the Study

• The Ministry of Education, Indonesia, has some interesting data on the English
proficiency of teachers who taught at the International Standard Schools
(locally known as RSBI schools) some years ago. As reported in Coleman
(2016), of the 27,000 RSBI teachers who took the TOEIC test, only a tiny
percentage (less than one per cent) of these teachers had a high level of
proficiency in English. Half of them had a very low proficiency level, while the
other half had a proficiency level in the elementary and intermediate range.
• Philippines known as one of the largest English- speaking nations (Cabigon, 2015). However,
an article published by the GMA News and Philstar Global mentioned that the English
proficiency level of College graduates from the Philippines is lower than the target English
proficiency of High school students in Thailand.

• Davao City topped the English Proficiency Index (EPI) among all cities in Mindanao, as per the
2023 EF English Proficiency Index. However, in the study conducted by Larycyneil (2019) The
English language instructors of UM Tagum Campus complained about their students’
proficiency in terms of using the English language as the primary language in communication.
Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the relationship between English Language Proficiency and English
Grades of students in Sampao, Integrated S.Y. 2023-2024. Specifically, this study deals with the
following:

Null Hypothesis
There is no significant relationship between the English language
proficiency and English grade among Grade 10 secondary students.
Significance of the Study

The accumulate of this study may provide significant benefits to the


following groups or individual:

• Students

• Teachers

• School

• Future Researchers
Definition of Terms
• The following terms are defined conceptually and operationally.

• English Language Proficiency Conceptually, according to Richards (2018) it one’s


ability to use language for a variety of communicative purposes. Proficient users are
said to have a good command of the language, i.e., they can understand the language
without difficulty, express a range of ideas clearly in speech and writing, and interact
with other speakers comfortably. Operationally, proficiency measures the level of
student’s advancement in terms of their English language skills.

• English Grades Conceptually, according to Emily (20013) it used to evaluate a


student's progress in English class and to determine whether or not they have met the
required standards for graduation. Operationally, it a measure of a student’s
proficiency in the English language.
Listening Conceptually, according to John and Paul (2015) it is a
complex cognitive process that involves the reception, interpretati
on, and comprehension of spoken language. Operationally, listeni
ng is the indicator of the independent variable that measures the
ability of the students to understand English in various contexts a
nd for different purposes.

Writing Conceptually, according to Johnson (2020) it is process of


expressing ideas, thoughts, or information through the use of writt
en symbols, characters, or words. It encompasses various forms
and genres, including essays, reports, narratives, poetry, and aca
demic papers, and may serve multiple purposes such as commun
ication, documentation, persuasion, or creative expression. Oper
ationally, writing is the indicator of the independent variable that q
uantify the English proficiency of the students.
Verbal Ability Conceptually, according to Jane (2003) it is an individual's
capacity to understand, produce, and manipulate language effectively, it
is a multifaceted skill that plays a pivotal role in human communication,
education, and professional life. Operationally, the verbal ability is the
indicator of the independent variable which it measures the ability of the
students to analyze sentences or concepts.

Reading Comprehension Conceptually, According to K12 Reader (2018)


is the ability to define word by word and create a profound idea from the
talks were given or read. It plays a significant role in the total functioning
of a community It is also one of the pillars of reading. Operationally,
reading comprehension is the indicator of the independent variable which
measures the student’s credibility to understand English.
Legal Basis
 English has been used as the medium of instruction. In the 1935
Constitution, Tagalog was launched as the basis of the national
language. This constitutional mandate was followed by the Bilingual
Policy by virtue of Department Order No. 25, series of 1974 of the
Department of Education, Culture and Sports (DECS), which
specified that the Filipino language will be used as the national
language. Meanwhile, English was to be used in Sci. The previous
policy was superseded by the Department Order No. 52, series of
1987 which ordered that Filipino and English will be used as the
media of instruction at all levels in order to meet the needs of the
country in the community of nations, leading to the modernization or
development process.

Verbal Ability - According to Selvarajan (2023) verbal ability is essential in education as it enables
students to express their thoughts and ideas effectively. It is particularly important in subjects that
involve reading and writing, such as English, History, and Social Sciences.

Reading Comprehension- According to Wilhelm (2018) Reading comprehension is the ability of a


person to translate the essence of the sentences using his own words. This also consists of
applying the text read in one’s life.

Listening - According to Gilakjani & Sabouri (2016). an active mental ability, it consists of auditory
discrimination, aural grammar, choosing necessary information, remembering it, and connecting it
to the process between sound and form of meaning.

Writing- According to Okasha & Hamdi (2014) explained that writing is one of the most important skills
in teaching English; it means the students should master writing skill, in order to understand well
about the process and product of writing.

• In the United States, Carhill, Suárez-Orozco & Páez
(2017) conducted a study to increase understanding of
factors that account for academic English language
proficiency in a sample of 274 adolescent first-
generation immigrant students from China, the
Dominican Republic, Haiti, Central America, and
Mexico. Previous research has shown the importance
of English language proficiency in predicting academic
achievement measured by GPA and achievement
tests.

Research Design

Research Instrument

• The researcher adapted a previous questionnaire from the study


“relationship between English language proficiency and the academic
performance of the fourth year high school students of BISU Candijay
campus”. The test composes of items for verbal ability, reading
comprehension, following directions and writing. This questionnaire is
use to determine the level of english proficiency of Grade 10 students in
Sampao, Integrates school. They are given one hour to do the test.
Data gathering procedure

This study will be conducted in Sampao, Integrated School, Sampao, Kapalong


Davao del Norte. The researchers will ask an approval to the school principal. Upon
approval, the researcher will send a letter to the school head of Sampao, Integrated
School. After it will be approved by the school head, the researcher will coordinate
with the respective advisers to aid the respondents for data gathering.
In gathering the data for the level of student’s in English language proficiency,
researcher will distribute and administer the questionnaire to the Grade 10 students and
will retrieve the same after it is accomplish. The gathered data will be tallied and
tabulated and then be given to the school statistician to be analyzed and interpreted
based on the purpose of the study.
Statistical Treatment of the Data
The data from the study were interpreted using the following statistical
tools.

Frequency. This will be used to determine the number of respondent's


male and female students.
Percentage. This will be used to determine the percent of the
respondents.
Mean. This will be used to determine the level of English language
proficiency and English grade of Grade 10 students in Sampao,
Integrated School.
