Roles of community Health Nurse
• The roles of community health nursing represents those broad areas of
responsibility that the community health nurse expected to assume. These
functions vary according to the education and experience, and designation for
which the nurse is employed. General professional nursing considers human being
as unitary whole in inter- action with the environment and provision of direct care
service to individuals and groups to assist them to achieve, and maintain health .

1.Adviser:
Since, community health nurses work with the families in the community; they
naturally develop a good interpersonal relationship with the people of a particular
community. However, individuals and families are looking towards the nurse as an
adviser mainly in practical and emergency matters, which relates to health.
Acceptance of advices from the community health nurses is well-documented .
2.Advocate:
Community health nurse is an advocate of patient's rights in relation to
their care. Nurse will act as an advocate, as far as health of the particular individual
is concerned.Nurse encourages the individual to take right food for maintaining

health right drugs for the treatment and refer to the right services to the right place.
3.Caregiver:
Community health nurses provide care to individuals, families and
vulnerable populations in a variety of settings (e.g. temples, churches, safe houses
for domestic violence victims, homes, homeless shelters, migrant health camps, and
worksites). The care includes a range of activities such as hands on physical care,
educating a client about his/her health problems and screening for undiagnosed
health conditions.

4.Case Manager:
Community health nurses help clients make decisions about
appropriate healthcare services and achieve service delivery integration, and
coordination. They advocate for Co services when needed and make referrals as
necessary.
5.Case Finder:
Community health nurses conduct targeted outreach to identify clients
in need of service and to assist clients in accessing appropriate care. They also
observe for clients who may have potential or actual service needs during their
daily course of activities.

6.Collaborator:
The community health nurse works collaboratively with patients and
also with members of the health team in assessing, planning, implementing and
evaluating interventions. The patient may be an individual, a family or a group of
persons in the community.
7.Teacher:
Community health nurses apply the principles of teaching and learning to
promote positive health action, and to facilitate behavioral change. They use these
principles to help clients across the age continuum learn about new events and
healthy functioning, and apply acquired knowledge.

8.Epidemiologist:
Community health nurses use the epidemiological meth- od to
analyze health problems among population groups and to develop population-
focused interventions. A nurse uses epidemiological skills when investing an
outbreak of influenza such as health education; epidemiology can be formal or
informal, planned or spontaneous.
9.Good Observer:
Community health nurse is expected to be alert to any deviation
from expected behavior with respect to illness, growth and development, response
to drugs, and general well-being of an individual, family and community.

10.Health Planner:
Community health nurse use the group process to provide
targeted preventive services and to manage caseload responsibilities. Through group
process, community health nurses are able to assist small client or community
groups to learn new knowledge and skills.
11.Manager:
Community health nurses are responsible for managing caseload demands in
an effective and efficient manner. They are also often responsible for managing
problems and activities of other members of the healthcare team. The community
health nurse assumes the role of manager in a variety of situations

12.Prevention of illness:
The primary focus of community health nursing is prevention of illness. The
nurse practices disease prevention in such endeavor as conducting immunization clinics,
assisting with case finding during outbreak of cholera and other epidemics, nutrition
counseling and many more diseases preventing programs.
13.Role Model:
The community health nurse serves as a role model for health behaviors in many
ways. Because of his/her contact with many relatively healthy people, the nurse has the
opportunity to influence them by setting an example through such activities as eating
properly, engaging in regular exercise, getting appropriate rest and seeking
preventive dental care.
