The recommendations for Bharat Ratna are made by the Prime Minister himself to the President.
No formal recommendations for this are necessary.
In terms of Article 18 (1) of the Constitution, the award cannot be used as a prefix or suffix to the recipient's name.
However, should an award winner consider it
necessary, he/she may use the following expression in their biodata/letterhead/visiting card etc. to indicate that he/she
is a recipient of the award:
•Padma Vibhushan is highest in the hierarchy of Padma Awards followed by Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri.

PADMA AWARD
•Selection Process:
• The Awards are conferred on the recommendations made by the Padma Awards Committee, which is constituted
by the Prime Minister every year.
• Awarded by President:
• The awards are presented by the President of India usually in the month of March/April every year.

Thereafter, three other gallantry awards — the Ashoka Chakra Class-I, the Ashoka Chakra Class-II, and the Ashoka Chakra
Class-III — were instituted in 1952 and were deemed to have effect from 15 th August 1947.
• These awards were renamed Ashoka Chakra, Kirti Chakra, and Shaurya Chakra respectively in January 1967.
•Order of precedence of these awards is the Param Vir Chakra, the Ashoka Chakra, the Mahavir Chakra, the Kirti
Chakra, the Vir Chakra, and the Shaurya Chakra.
The gallantry awards are announced twice in a year — first on the occasion of the Republic Day and then
on the occasion of the Independence Day.
PARAMVIR CHAKRA
•It is India's highest military decoration awarded for the
•highest degree of valour or self-sacrifice in the presence
•of the enemy.
•The Param Vir Chakra was introduced on January 26, 1950,
•on the first Republic Day with retrospective effect from 15 August 1947.
•Literally, Param Vir Chakra means
•'Wheel (or Cross) of the Ultimate Brave'.
•It can be awarded posthumously.
•It is similar to the British Victoria Cross, US Medal of Honor,
or French Legion of Honor or Russian Cross of St. George.
•Design:
•The medal was designed by Mrs. Savitri Khanolkar.
•The medal is cast in bronze and circular in shape.
•In the centre, on a raised circle, is the state emblem, surrounded by four replicas of Indra's Vajra, flanked by the sword of
Shivaji.
•On its reverse, it shall have embossed Param Vir Chakra both in Hindi and English with two lotus flowers between Hindi
and English. The fitting will be swivel mounting.
•The decoration is suspended from a straight swiveling suspension bar, and is held by a 32 mm purple ribbon.
•First winner: Major Somanth Sharma, from the Kumaon regiment.
•Till now, only 21 people had been given the Param Vir Chakra award of which 14 are posthumous.
MAHA VIR CHAKRA
•The Maha Vir Chakra is the second highest military decoration in India,
after the Param Vir Chakra
•It replaced the British Distinguished Service Order (DSO).
•The medal may be awarded posthumously.
•.It Means 'Great Wheel of Bravery'
Design:
•The medal is made of standard silver and is circular in shape.
•Embossed on the obverse is a five pointed heraldic star with
circular center-piece bearing the gilded state emblem of India in the center.
•The words "Mahavira Chakra" are embossed in Hindi and English on the reverse with two lotus flowers in the middle.
•The decoration is worn on the left chest with a half-white and half-orange riband about 3.2 cm in width, the orange being near
the left shoulder.

VIR CHAKRA
•The Vir Chakra is an Indian wartime military bravery award presented
for acts of gallantry on the battlefield, on land or in the air or at sea.
•It means 'wheel of bravery”
•It is third in precedence in wartime gallantry awards and comes after
the Param Vir Chakra and Maha Vir Chakra.
•It replaced the British Distinguished Service Cross (DSC), Military Cross (MC)
and Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC).
Design:
•The medal is 1+3⁄8inch circular silver medal.
• A five pointed star, with the chakra in the centre, and, on this,
the domed gilded state emblem.
•The decoration is named on the rim and suspended from a swiveling straight-bar suspender.
•The decoration is almost always named and dated on the edge.
•Around a plain centre, two legends are separated by lotus flowers; with Vir Chakra in Hindi above and in English below.
•The ribbon is 32 mm, half dark blue and half orange-saffron; dark blue 16 mm, saffron 16 mm.
ASHOK CHAKRA
•Medal: Circular in shape, one and three-eighth inches in diameter, with rims on
both sides. The medal shall be of gold gild. On the obverse of the medal shall be
embossed a replica of Ashoka’s Chakra in the centre, surrounded by a lotus
wreath. Along the rim, on the inner side, shall be a pattern of lotus leaves,
flowers and buds. On its reverse shall be embossed the words “Ashok Chakra”
both in Hindi and English the two versions being separated by two lotus flowers.
•Ribbon: Green colour ribbon divided into two equal segments by an orange
vertical line.
KIRTI CHAKRA
•Medal: Circular in shape and of standard silver, one and three-eighth inches in
diameter, with rims on both sides. On the obverse of the medal shall be embossed
a replica of Ashoka’s Chakra in the centre, surrounded by a lotus wreath. Along
the rim, on the inner side, shall be a pattern of lotus leaves, flowers and buds. On
its reverse shall be embossed the words “KIRTI CHAKRA” both in Hindi and
English, the two versions being separated by two lotus flowers.
•Ribbon: Green colour ribbon divided into three equal parts by two orange
vertical lines.
SHAURYA CHAKRA
•Medal: Circular in shape and made of bronze, one and three-eighth inches in
diameter, with rims on both sides. On the obverse of the medal shall be embossed
a replica of Ashoka’s Chakra in the centre, surrounded by a lotus wreath. Along
the rim, on the inner side, shall be a pattern of lotus leaves, flowers and buds. On
its reverse shall be embossed the words “SHAURYA CHAKRA” both in Hindi
and English, the two versions being separated by two lotus flowers.
•Ribbon: Green colour ribbon divided into four equal parts by three vertical lines.
