What is CLAIM?
For a Speaker: A claim is the main
topic of an argument where the
speaker tries to assert on his or her
beliefs, ideas, or actions.
What is CLAIM?
For a Writer: A claim is the central
statement of a text where the
writer tries to prove an argument
by providing details, explanations,
and other types of evidence.

Claim of Fact
A claim about whether something is true or untrue.
A claim of fact has the potential to spark
controversy, conflict, and change.
A claim that reports, describes, predicts.
A claim that something has existed (past), exist
(present) or will exist (future)
Question: Can this claim be proven or supported by
research?
Claim of Fact
EXAMPLES:
1. The new coronavirus was responsible
for an outbreak of respiratory disease
and pneumonia in Wuhan, China.
2. The oldest known disease in the
world is leprosy.
Claim of Policy
Indicates an action a person or a group
must take regarding specific policy.
Urges that an action be taken or
discontinued in specific policies.
Shows that a problem exists and it’s good
to solve it in a certain way.
Claim of Policy
Question: What should be done or changed to
improve the situation?
Examples:
1.Maintain at least one meter distance between
yourself and others.
2.Children in low-income families should receive
medical insurance from the government.
Claim of Value
Gives judgment about morality, beauty, merit, or
wisdom.
Compares and contrasts a problem with a similar
one in another time and/or place
Based on preference such as likes or dislikes,
good, or bad.

evidence.
THREE TYPES OF CLAIM: FACT, POLICY, and VALUE.
A Claim of Fact answers the question: Can this claim be
proven or supported by research?
A Claim of Policy answers: What should be done or changed
to improve the situation?
A Claim of Value answers: Is it good or bad?
Characteristics of a Good Claim:
argumentative, debatable, specific, focused,
interesting, engaging and logical.
