Lesson 2.1 Arithmetic Sequence
Sequence
Arithmetic Sequence
• Is a sequence in which the
difference between any
two consecutive terms is
the same.
• This constant difference is
called the common
difference, and will be
denoted by ,
Ex. Find the difference of the
following arithmetic
sequence.
a.
. ∴ The
common
𝒅=𝟑𝟏 −𝟐𝟏=𝟏𝟎 difference of
𝒅=𝟒𝟏 −𝟑𝟏=𝟏𝟎 the sequence
is 10
b. 2 ∴ The
. common
difference of
𝒅=𝟖 −𝟓=𝟑 the sequence
𝒅=𝟏𝟏 −𝟖=𝟑 is 3
c. ∴ The
common
. difference of
the sequence
is
Graph of an Arithmetic
Sequence
• An arithmetic sequence is
a function whose domain is
the set of counting
numbers.
• The elements of the range
are the terms of the
sequence.
• The graph of arithmetic
sequence consists of
isolated points.
Ex 1. Find the common
difference of the terms of
the arithmetic sequence
then graph the sequence.
n 1 2 3 4 5 …
A(n) 8 5 2 -1 -4 …
Sol.
n 1 2 3 4 5 …
(1,8)
A(n) 8 5 2 -1 -4 …
(2,5)
(3,2)
(4,-1)
∴ The common difference of the
sequence is -3 (5,-4)
Ex 2. Find the common
difference of the terms of
the arithmetic sequence
then graph the sequence.
n 1 2 3 4 5 …
A(n) 2 4 6 8 10 …
Sol.
n 1 2 3 4 5 …
(5,10)
A(n) 2 4 6 8 10 …
(4,8)
(3,6)
(2,4)
(1,2)
𝒅=𝟖 −𝟒=𝟒
𝒅=𝟏𝟔 −𝟖=𝟖
𝒅=𝟑𝟐 −𝟏𝟔=𝟏𝟔
There is no common difference.
Hence, the sequence is not an
Arithmetic Sequence
Formula:
Arithmetic sequence
Where:
is nth term
is the first term
n is the number of terms
d is the common difference
Examples
1. Write the next term of the
arithmetic sequence 7, 5, 3, 1, -1, . .
Sol. Determine the common
difference of the arithmetic
sequence
𝒅=𝟓 −𝟕=−𝟐
𝒅=𝟑 −𝟓=−𝟐
𝒅=𝟏 −𝟑=−𝟐
𝒅=( −𝟏)− 𝟏=− 𝟐
So the
to find the next three terms
add
𝒅=( − 𝟏 ) + ( − 𝟐 ) =− 𝟑
𝒅=( − 𝟑 ) + ( − 𝟐 ) =− 𝟓
𝒅=( − 𝟓 ) + ( − 𝟐 ) =− 𝟕
∴ the next three terms of the
sequence are
2. Find the 14th term of the
arithmetic sequence 2, 5, 8, 11,
14, . . .
Sol. Find
so
Formula:
Arithmetic sequence
Sol.
𝒂𝟏𝟒 =𝟐+ 𝟑𝟗
𝒂𝟏𝟒 =𝟒𝟏
∴ the 14th term of the sequence
2, 5, 8, 11, 14, . . . is 41.
3. What is the 20th term of the
arithmetic sequence -3, 0, 3,
6, . . .
Sol. Find
so
Formula:

Eliminate the variable , by
subtraction.

Arithmetic Mean
The terms of an arithmetic
sequence that are between two
given terms are called
arithmetic means.
Ex. In the arithmetic sequence
5, 8, 11, 14, 17, there are three
arithmetic means between 5 and
17.
These are 8, 11, and 14.
Ex. Find the three arithmetic
means between 17 and 1.
Sol. Sequence is in the form of
𝒂𝒏 =𝒂 𝟏+ ( 𝒏 −𝟏 ) 𝒅 −𝟏𝟔=𝟒 𝒅
𝒂𝟓=𝟏𝟕 + ( 𝟓 −𝟏 ) 𝒅 −𝟏𝟔 𝟒 𝒅
𝟏=𝟏𝟕+ ( 𝟓 −𝟏 ) 𝒅 𝟒 =
𝟒
𝟏 − 𝟏𝟕=𝟒 𝒅
−𝟒=𝒅
The arithmetic means are:
𝒂𝒏 =𝒂 𝟏+ ( 𝒏 −𝟏 ) 𝒅
𝒂𝟐=𝟏𝟕 + ( 𝟐 −𝟏 ) (− 𝟒)
𝒂𝟐=𝟏𝟕 +(𝟏)( −𝟒)
𝒂𝟐 =𝟏𝟕 +− 𝒂𝟐=𝟏𝟑𝟒
