INTRODUCTION
What is climate ?
Climate is the average weather in
a given area over a longer period
of time. A description of a climate
includes information on the
average temperature in different
seasons, rainfall, and sunshine.
What is climate change?
Climate change is any systematic
change in the long-term statistics
of climate variables such as
temperature, precipitation,
pressure, or wind sustained over
several decades or longer.
CLIMATE CHANGE
• The consequences of such rapid change are - global warming, change
of seasonal pattern, excessive rain, melting of ice cap, flood, rising
sea level, drought, etc. leading to extremity of all kinds.
• Climate change encompasses not only rising average temperatures
but also extreme weather events, shifting wildlife populations and
habitats, rising seas, and a range of other impacts.

HOW DOES CLIMATE CHANGE AFFECT THE PLANT?

• Climate change causes warmer summer temperatures and
inconsistent precipitation patterns. These environmental alterations
affect the flowering periods of plants globally. As the global
temperature increases, plants will flower earlier in the season.
• Decrease in potential yields is likely to be caused by shortening of the
growing period, decrease in water availability and poor vernalization.
“Digital tools and data science are accelerating
agriculture innovation and transforming
farming to advance how we convert natural
resources into food, and ultimately have a
positive impact on our planet.”

Jeremy Williams
WHAT IS CLIMATE CHANGE?
The periodic modification of Earth’s climate
brought about due to the changes in the
atmosphere as well as the interactions between the
atmosphere and various other geological,
chemical, biological and geographical factors
within the Earth’s system is called Climate change.

Why Climate - Smart
Horticulture?

Higher temperatures, changes in precipitation

patterns, rising sea levels and more frequent extreme
weather events pose risks for Horticulture, food and
water supplies.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1 & 2

envision a world with zero hunger.
Food supply needs to grow by 60 per cent from 2006 levels
by 2030 in order to satisfy the demand for food.

In order to meet the projected demand for food, we would

require higher yields, given that it may not be possible to
raise acreage substantially.

Climate-smart horticulture can help farmers adapt to and

mitigate climate change.

When farmers plant trees to prevent land degradation, they

also contribute to climate change mitigation by removing
carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

ROBOTICS

Robots can be used for an

4.Predictive modeling and planning.

UNMANNED AERIAL
SYSTEM
• Evaluate small unmanned aerial systems for
aerial crop surveying;

• Investigate the ability of Structure from

Motion (SfM) techniques to derive accurate 3D
point clouds of the plant canopy across different
genotypes in two species;

•Develop a remote sensing processing workflow to

derive relevant plant height metrics and relate
these to measured plant canopy height and
structural parameters;

•Investigate the accuracy of SfM plant height

estimates when compared to ground and
terrestrial LiDAR scanning measurements.
CONCLUSION

Identifying and promoting climate-smart practices

that strengthen rural communities, improve
smallholder livelihoods and employment, and avoid
negative social and cultural impacts, such as loss of
land tenure and forced migration. In many
developing countries, the design and
implementation of agricultural support policies
could be radically improved. The objectives of
climate-smart horticulture goals need to be
integrated into this broad policy context.
