Lesson objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students must have:
1.defined what a PVC conduit is;
2.identified the different types of PVC conduit bends;
3.explained the procedure of offset bending of PVC conduit;
4.demonstrated the procedures in offset bending of PVC
conduit while observing safety; and
5.explained the importance of correct offset bending of PVC
conduit.
What is a PVC pipe?
Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) conduit is made from thermos plastic that is used to
protect and route electrical wiring in a building or structure. It is the most
popular type of non-metallic conduit and has several advantages:
• Versatile and easy to install
• Typically less expensive than other options
• Lightweight
• Available in a variety of wall thicknesses
• Works well in concrete and underground
Despite its many advantages in other applications, PVC conduit isn't
recommended for use in areas with direct sunlight exposure. Sunlight can
break down the material over time.
Different types of PVC pipe bends
Burned
Kinks or Groove
The diameter of the conduit is greatly reduced due to
improper bending procedure
Importance of proper PVC conduit
bending
Understanding the right conduit and bending tool for the job is
crucial in electrical installations. It ensures the safety, durability,
and efficiency of the electrical system. However, bending conduit
especially RMC, IMC, EMT, and PV requires skill and
knowledge to do correctly. Improper bending can damage both
the conduit and the wiring inside and may lead to safety hazards.
EVALUATION
1. Define in your own words what a PVC conduit is.
2. Give at least 3 advantages of using PVC conduit.
3. What is the importance of proper PVC pipe bending?
Procedures in performing offset bends in PVC
conduits
1. Prepare and wear your PPE
Gloves, safety shoes, cover-all, face mask
2. Prepare the tools and materials that you need
heat gun, PVC pipe cutter, marker(pencil), pull-push rule, sand,
masking tape damp cloth
3. Measure the length of the PVC to be bent.
4. Measure 5 inches from the end of the conduit and divide it into 2 parts. (2.5 inches per part)
5. Pour sand to the PVC conduit.
6. Heat the PVC conduit on the part for the offset. Make sure that the heat is distributed evenly.
Then perform the offset bend.
7. Wipe the PVC conduit with a damp cloth
8. Remove the sand and install
