Lesson 1

Relation and
Function
Prepared by: Mr. Jerry Mae A. Ranes
Objectives

At the end of this lesson, the learner should be able to

• Define the basic rules of differentiation;

• Appreciate how patterns become helpful in

differentiating functions; and

• Apply the derived rules of differentiation in finding

derivatives
Essential Questions

 What is the importance of differentiation rules in the

study of derivatives?

 How can you define each basic rule of differentiation?

 How can you apply the derived rules of differentiation in

finding derivatives?
Recall

Definition of Derivatives
Let be a function defined on an open interval , and let . The derivative of
at is defined to be:

if this limit exists. That is, the derivative of at is the slope of the tangent
line at , if it exists.
Recall

Differentiation Notations
If , the derivative of is commonly denoted by:
Lagrange’s D-notation or Newton’s
Leibniz’s Notation
Notation Euler’s Notation Notation

𝑓 ( 𝑥 ) 𝐷𝑥 [ 𝑓 ( 𝑥) ] 𝑦
˙
′ 𝑑𝑦 𝑑
𝑑𝑥 𝑑𝑥
[ 𝑓 ( 𝑥) ]
Recall

Alternative Definition of Derivatives

Let be a function defined on an open interval , and let . The derivative of
at is defined to be:
Recall

Using the definition and the alternative definition of

differentiation, compute for the function:

𝑓 ( 𝑥 )− 𝑓 ( 𝑥0) ′ 𝑓 ( 𝑥+h ) − 𝑓 ( 𝑥 )

𝑓 ( 𝑥0 ) =𝑙𝑖𝑚 𝑓 ( 𝑥 )=𝑙𝑖𝑚
𝑥→ 𝑥0
𝑥 − 𝑥0 h→0 h
Guide Questions

 What can you observe about the computing of the

derivative using the definition of a simple polynomial?

 Do you think there are ways or rules that we will enable

us to find derivatives easily?

 We call them DIFFERENTIATION RULES.

Let’s Learn It!

The Constant Rule

1
If where is a constant, then . The derivative of a constant is equal to
zero.

Note: The graph of a constant

function is a horizontal line and a
horizontal line has zero slope. The
derivative measures the slope of the
tangent, and so the derivative is zero.

The Product Rule

5
If and are differentiable functions, then

Note: To easily remember the product rule, remember this pattern: .

This literally means, product of the 1st function and the derivative of the
second function (de2nd) then add to the product of the 2nd function and
the derivative of the 1st function.

The Quotient Rule

6
Let and be two differentiable functions with . Then

Note: To easily remember the quotient rule, refer to this pattern:

 “hi” refers to the function at the numerator
 “lo” refers to the function at the denominator
 This literally means, product of the “lo” function and the derivative of the “hi”
function minus the product of “hi” function and the derivative of the “lo”
function all divided by the square of “lo” function.

Real-life Application

Why do they need to study this especially that they will soon
pursue a program aligned to science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics?

• Some application of derivatives in real-life is that they are used

to find maximum and minimum values in real-life situations,
such as optimizing business profit or determining the speed of
a moving object at a given time.
