ABSTRACT:
 The present work is mainly focused on transient behavior of the
laminated composite curved panel.

A nine-noded isoparametric element having 6 DOFs per node, using

first-order shear deformation theory based on finite element
formulation is adopted for discretizing the domain.

 The governing equation is obtained by principle of virtual work. The

accuracy and adaptability of the present finite element model are
established through various validation studies.

 As transient analysis include time-dependent equation, the equation

is explained by using Newmark’s direct-time-integration techniques
with Newmark’s parameter.
INTRODUCTION:
WHAT IS A LAMINATED COMPOSITE MATERIAL?
Composite materials are defined as materials which are composed of two or more
materials at a microscopic level and have chemically distinct phases (not soluble in
each other) to achieve superior properties than the constituents/parent materials.

A laminate is framed by stacking a few laminas. It is the most widely recognized type
of fibre strengthened composites.

WHY WE ARE USING?

Laminated composite material have properties like high stiffness, high strength-to-
weight ratio, long fatigue life, high resistance to corrosion and wear, low maintenance
cost, and the flexibility of being designed according to user requirements.
This laminated composites are finding a growing number of applications in the field
where weight saving plays an important role.
WHAT ARE THE APLLICATIONS ?
‘Laminated composite plates are being extensively used in the space-station structures,
constructions, engineering structures, submarines, aircraft & automobile industries.

Composite materials are grouped into two general classifications (1) particulate
composites (2) fiber reinforced composites(FRC).
MATHEMATICAL FORMULATION:

(Dimensions of the composite panel)

a=panel length
b=panel width
h=panel thickness
Rxx = radius of curvature about yz-plane
Ryy=radius of curvature about xz-plane
FINITE ELEMENT FORMULATION:
In order to discretize the laminate, A 9 nodded Iso-parametric
serendipity element having 6 DOFs per node is employed for the finite
element formulation of the mathematical model.

KINEMATIC RELATION AND STRAIN-DISPLACEMENT MODEL:
 According to first-order shear deformation theory and displacements u, v, w,
at any point on panel surface (x, y, z), is given by relation as follows-
u.(x, y, z, t)=u00(x, y, t)+zϴxx(x, y, t)

v.(x, y, z, t)=v00(x, y, t)+zϴyy(x, y, t)

w.(x, y, z, t)=w00(x, y, t)+zϴzz(x, y, t)

On the basic concept of linear-strain, the strains at any point in the panel can
be expressed as follows-
ϵxx=

ϵyy=

ϵzz=
Now, the final displacement function becomes-
u(x, y ,z t)= (1+)u0(x, y, t)-z
v(x, y, z, t)= (1+)v0(x, y, t)-z
w(x, y, z, t)=w0(x, y, t)+z

We know from FEM for panel

{U} = [N] {de}

Where,

de=nodal displacement of nodes of panel element

{de}=[

{U}=[
[N]=
[N] =shape function

Where, Shape function is obtained by-

N1= N 5=

N2= N 6=

N3= N 7=

N4= N 8=

N9=
STRESS-STRAIN RELATIONSHIP:
According to generalized Hook’s law, the stress-strain relationship is given
by-
{σij} =[D] {ϵij}
For kth orthotropic lamina layer –
{σkij} =[Dk]{ϵkij}

where,

[D] = [Qij] = transformed stiffness matrix depends on material

properties and lamina orientation.
Where, Q ij is defined in terms of material properties-
k Qk22=
Qk44= Gk23
Qk11=
Qk55= Gk13
Qk12=
Qk66= Gk12

GOVERNING EQUATION:

By the principle of virtual work, the governing equation can be obtained

[M]+ [C] {}+ [K]= P(t)

Where,

[M] is the mass-coefficient matrix

[C] is the damping matrix

[K] is the stiffness matrix

TRANSIENT VIBRATION ANALYSIS:
As this is a time-dependent equation, the equation is explained by using
Newmark’s direct-time-integration techniques with Newmark’s parameter
γ=0.5 and β=0.5 Applying Newmark’s scheme

SCOPE FOR THE FUTURE WORK:

 The current analysis can be extended by providing more no of degrees of

freedom about 10 to 15 in the displacement field function in order to get more
accurate response.

 The impact of several boundary conditions on the natural frequency of laminated

composites can be further analysed.

 The non-linear response of the laminated composite panel should be taken in to

account in order to predict the dynamic behaviour of the laminated composites.

 The dynamic response of laminated composites can be analysed with integrated

piezoelectric sensors and actuators.
WORK TO BE DONE:

 Devlope a MATLAB computer program through which I can validate the

accurateness of the current finite element model for transient response
of laminated composite panel by comparing with the different theories
that revealed in the literature survey and with the exact solution.
