• Objective
• At the end of the unit learners will be able to
• Define tertiary prevention and rehabilitation
• Discuss the behaviours and rehabilitative needs of people
with serious mental health problems
• Discuss response of families and communities to wards
rehabilitative.
• Recovery
• Recovery is the process in which people are able to live ,
work, learn, and participate fully in their community.

• Recovery is a journey of healing and change enables a person


with a mental health problem to-live a meaningful life in a
community of his or her-choice while to achieve his or her full
potential
PSYCHIATRIC REHABILITATION
• Psychiatric Rehabilitation known asPsychosocial Rehabilitation
is a comprehensive strategy for meeting the needs if persons
with severe and persistent mental illness .It refers to efforts to
restore persons with psychiatrist disabilities to optimal state
of constructive treatment activity.
• Recovery refers to individuals level of progress.e. his/her
ability to cope with the illness/disability and self image as a
functioning person.
Type of rehabilitation
• Medical Rehabilitation: help a person better in all his daily
physical and mental activities. Related to increasing the
potential capabilities and correction of deformities,
restoration of functions .
• Social Rehabilitation: implies social life; restoration of family ,
family social interactions or relationships
• Psychological Rehabilitation:Includes psychological
restorations of personal dignity and confidence of the
disabled.
• Vocational Rehabilitation: help those patient who find it
difficulty to get employment
Goals of Rehabilitation

• To achieve Recovery
• Maximum Community integration
• Possible quality of life
Principles of rehabilitation:
• Rehabilitation should begin during the initial contact with the
patient
• The emphasis of rehabilitation is to restore the patient in
independence or pre-illness or pre-injuries level of function in
as short a time as possible
• He must be an active participant.
• Motivates the patient and help him to attain social
Independence’s
• Focus is on needs of group of people with specific conditions
• Every patient has right to the rehabilitation services.
Characteristics of Serious Mental Illness
• People who have SMI are likely to have primary and
secondary symptoms.
• Primary symptoms are directly caused by the illness . For
example, hallucinations and delusions are primary symptoms
of schizophrenia, and hyperactivity are primary symptoms of
bipolar disorder .
• Secondary symptoms, such as loneliness and social isolation,
are caused by the person response to the illness or its
treatment.
Behaviours related to serious mental Illness
• Blocks to recovery of individuals with SMI include
poverty victimisation , and stigma.
• People with SMI are often unemployed, less likely to be
involved in close relationships, and tend to have fewer
financial resources than their peers
• Stigma experienced by those who are mentally ill has
been Linked to self-esteem.

• A study of women with mental illness found that’s when there
was low perception of discrimination and the women did not
believe that discrimination was sincere, they had higher-self-
esteem .
• Thus the effects of stigma, poverty and victimisation should
be included in patient assessment and treatment planning.

program that provides individuals with disabilities or other
barriers to employment with the support and
accommodations.

• Integrated with psychiatric treatment’s
