The National Artist

of the Philippines
OBJECTIVES
• At the end this lesson, you should be able to:
1. Explain Filipino artist’ roles and identify their contributions to
contemporary arts.
2. Identify the Filipino who are honored the Order of National Artists.
3. Explain the criteria and qualifications for naming the national artist.
4. Appreciate efforts of individuals in pursuit of the development of arts and
letters.
5. Value the honor and prestige of the award given to such artists by the
government.
The Artist and the Contemporary Arts

• Contemporary Filipino artists have a


responsibility to create art that would enlighten
the people of the current conditions of the
society.
An Artist for the Nation
• A national artist is a distinguished individual
who has made an outstanding contribution to
Philippine arts.
Fernando Amorsolo

• In 1972, the Philippines


named its first
national artist – world-class
painter.
• In 1972, Presidential Proclamation No.
1001, s. 1972 created and established “the
Award and Decoration of National Artist.”
What does it take to be a
National Artist?
• Living artist who are natural-born Filipino
Citizens at the time of nominations, as well as
those who died after the establishment of the
award in 1972 but were Filipino citizens at the
time of death.
•Artists who through the content and form
of their works have contributed in
building a Filipino sense of nationhood.
• Artists who have pioneered in a mode of
creative expression or style, thus earning
distinction and making an impact on
succeeding generations of artists.
• Artist who have created a substantial and
significant body of works and/or consistently
displayed excellence in the practice of their art
form thus enriching artistic expression or style.
Artist who enjoy broad acceptance through the following:

1. Prestigious national and/or international recognition, such as


the Gawad CCP para sa Sining, CCP Thirteen Artists Award,
and NCCA Alab ng Haraya
2. Critical acclaim and/or reviews of their works
3. Respect and esteem from peers.
The National Artist Insignia

• It is a Grand Collar adorned by


circular links representing the arts.
The main medallion
commemorates the sun and the colors of the Philippine flag.
The highly stylized three Ks ( ≈ ) stand for “katotohanan,
kabutihan at kagandahan” (true good and the beautiful).
What Does the award
Give?
• The rank and title of National Artist, as
proclaimed by the President of the Philippines

• The National Artist gold-plated medallion


minted by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas
(BSP) and citation
• Lifetime emolument and material and physical
benefits comparable in value to those received by
the highest officers of the land.

• A place of honor, in line wuth protocular


precedence, in state fuctions, national
commemoration ceremonies, and all other
cultural presentations.
