Note:
the NUMBER of particles is always the same, but
the MASS of each mole will be very different!
This is because atoms have different atomic
masses.
mole = mass (grams)
molecular mass (g/mol)
1. How many moles are present in 34.2 g of Ca?
n =m = 34.2 g = 0.86 mol
MM 40 g/mol
2. How many moles are present in 69.7 g of Au?
C: 12 g/mol x 17 =
H: 1 g/mol x 18 =
F: 19 g/mol x 3 =
N: 14 g/mol x 1 =
O: 16 g/mol x 1 =
Total = g/mol

Caffeine,the compound that basically
keeps Mrs. Mannion alive, has the
following formula: C8H10N4O2. What is the
molar mass of Caffeine?
12. g C x 100 = 27 % C
44g CO2
32 g O x 100 = 73 % O
44 g CO2 100%

What is the percent composition of lactic acid,
C3H6O3, a compound that appears in the blood
after vigorous activity?
Solution
STEP 1
3 (12) + 6 (1) + 3 (16) = 90 g/mol
STEP 2
%C = 36 g C x 100= 40% C
90 g
%H = 6 g H x 100 = 7% H
90 g
%O = 48 g O x 100 = 53% O
90 g 100%

THEORETICAL YIELD
The theoretical yield of a reaction is the
amount of product that would be formed if
the reaction went to completion.
PERCENT YIELD
Calculate the percent yield of a reaction that
had a theoretical yield of 3.76 g and an
actual yield of 1.45 g.
If the actual yield of a reaction was 0.567 g,
and the theoretical yield was 0.750 g, what
was the percent yield of this reaction?
Calculate the percent yield of a reaction that
produced 5.78 g NH4, if its theoretical yield
was 6.78 g.
