What is Independent two samples t-test?
The independent samples t-Test is
probably the single most widely used test in statistics. It is used to compare differences between separate groups. In Psychology, these groups are often composed by randomly assigning research participants to conditions. However, this test can also be used to explore differences in naturally occurring groups. The Independent Samples t Test is a parametric test. The variables used in this test are known as: Dependent variable, or test variable Independent variable, or grouping variable The Independent Samples t Test is commonly used to test the following: Statistical differences between the means of two groups Statistical differences between the means of two interventions Statistical differences between the means of two change scores Data Requirements
1.Dependent variable that is continuous
(i.e., interval or ratio level) 2. Independent variable that is categorical and has exactly two categories 3. Cases that have values on both the dependent and independent variables 4. Independent samples/groups (i.e., independence of observations) 5. Random sample of data from the population 6. Normal distribution (approximately) of the dependent variable for each group 7. Homogeneity of variances (i.e., variances approximately equal across groups) 8. No outliers Examples: We may be interested in differences of emotional intelligence between males and females. We may be interested in differences in the level of productivity of teachers classified as to age , sex and marital status. We may be interested in differences of life satisfaction of the students who underwent counseling. These are our hypotheses Underwent Did not Underwent Counseling Counseling 1. Compute the mean of each group. Did not Underwent Underwent Counseling Counseling 2. Compute the variance in each group. 3. Compute the standard error of difference between means. 4. Compute the t- statistics 5. Compute the degree of critical value 6. Compare the t-statistics (computed value) to critical value (from the table) If the t-statistics is greater than compared to the table t, reject the Null Hypothesis
Conclusion: There is significant difference
in the life satisfaction of the students who underwent the life counseling. Summary The independent samples t-test is probably the single most widely used test in statistics.
