What Is a Dragon?

Dragons are a type of mythical


creature. This means that they are
not real.

There are many stories written


about dragons from all around the
world.

Dragons are often described as


having very long lives. Some even
live forever!
What Do Dragons Look
Like?

Dragons are usually huge creatures.

They are often described as being a


bit like lizards or snakes, with scaly
skin.

In lots of stories, dragons have


wings and four legs. Sometimes,
they might even have more than
one head!

Dragons might also have clubbed or


spiky tails, sharp teeth and claws.
Often, they have horns too.
Do Dragons Have
Special Powers?
In many stories, dragons can fly.

Some dragons can breathe fire.


They might also have a
venomous bite or be able to
spread clouds of poison.

In some stories, dragons are


described as being able to
vanish from one spot and
appear in another.

These dragons can also


sometimes control storms
and the rain.
Where Do Dragons
Live?

In some stories, dragons are guardians of treasure. In these


tales, dragons find a hoard of treasure and move in to
protect it.

The treasure is normally hidden in places such as caves or


deep in the mountains.

Dragons might also live in the sea or water. In many stories,


dragons are said to live in rivers or lakes.

There have even been stories about dragons who live in the
clouds and guard the sky.
Dragons Around the
World

Dragons can be very different depending


on where in the world the story comes
from.

In some stories from Europe, dragons are


usually scary beasts. In these stories,
there
is normally a hero who defeats the
dragon
and saves the day!

In some stories that come from East


Asia, dragons are usually very wise and
powerful. In these tales, dragons are
important creatures who can bring good
fortune to people.

Saint
George
The legend of Saint George
and the dragon has been
retold over hundreds of years.
The story comes from the
country of Georgia.

As the story goes, a dragon


came to a village and began
attacking the animals and
people.

A knight called Saint George


arrived and saw what was
happening. He decided he
would help the people.

He fought the dragon and


defeated it, saving everyone in
the village.
The Welsh
Dragon (Y
Ddraig Goch)
The story tells of a king who
wanted to build a castle at the top
of a hill in Wales. But the castle
kept falling down.

The king was told that this was


because there was a large lake
underneath the hill where two
dragons slept: one red and one
white.

When the ground was dug up, the


sleeping dragons awoke and they
began a ferocious fight.

The red dragon eventually won the


fight and flew free.
Fáfnir
The tale of Fáfnir comes from Norse
mythology in Scandinavia.

According to the legend, there once


lived a very greedy dwarf called
Fáfnir.

Fáfnir wanted to be rich and to


have lots of treasure. He was
desperate to have the fortune that
the god Odin had given to his
father.

Fáfnir became obsessed with the


treasure and eventually, his greed
changed him into a dragon. He was
cursed to stand guard over the
treasure forever.
Chinese
Dragons
In China, dragons are very important symbols of wisdom, good
luck and power.

There are many important types of dragon according to


Chinese legends, including the following:

The Dragon and the
Pearl
This myth comes from China.

In the story, a very greedy emperor ruled over the people.


The crops had failed and people didn’t have enough food to
eat.

A boy discovered a field of grass which grew back every


time he cut it. He dug up some of the grass and found a
magical pearl underneath.

The boy hid the pearl in an empty sack of rice. When he


came back, he saw that the sack was overflowing with rice!

The boy decided to share the food with his neighbours. In


time, the emperor heard about the pearl and wanted to take
it for himself.

The boy swallowed the pearl to hide it and he turned into a


magical dragon. He protected the land and people from that
day on.
Dragons Everywhere!

People around the world are still inspired


by dragons today. They are important
symbols
of power and strength.

In Wales, the red dragon is used as a


national emblem. The dragon even
appears on the Welsh flag.

In China, dragons are highly respected.


At every Lunar New Year celebration, a
dragon dance is performed to bring good
fortune, health and blessings to the
community.
