1.What is Network Topology
Network Topology means arrangement and connection of
computer or nodes or devices in such way by which they can
communicate with one-another. In Network topology many
other devices are present like cables, switch, Hub, Server etc.

❖ There are main two category

I) Physical
II) Logical.

Topology topology

•Easy to install and configure

•Inexpensive
•Easily extended
Disadvantages of bus
In the bus topology, the computers are connected topology
through a common communication media. A special
type of central wire is used as communication media.
•Performance decreases
This central wire is called Bus. The computer are
attached through the bus the ends of the bus are •Weak signals

absorb signals.
The star topology uses a
separate cable for each work
station as shown in fig.The
cable connects the work
station to a central device Star Topology
typically a HUB. The
configuration provides a
more reliable network that is
easily expended. With star

Ring Topology

A ring network is one where all workstations Ring

and other devices are connected in a
continuous loop. There is no central server.

Advantages of Ring Topology Disadvantages of Ring Topology

● Easier to manage; easier to locate a ● Expensive
defective node or cable problem ● Requires more cable and network
● Well-suited for transmitting signals equipment at the start
over long distances on a LAN ● Not used as widely as bus topology
● Handles high-volume network traffic –Fewer equipment options
–Fewer options for expansion to
high-speed communication

Mesh Topology
It is a point-to-point connection to other
nodes or devices. Traffic is carried only
between two devices or nodes to which
it is connected. Mesh has n(n-2)/2
physical channels to link hn devices.

Conclusion
Understanding the different topologies and networks
available will allow any business or individual to determine
the network that will best suit the business or individual
needs and will help to establish the correct expectations.
Knowing what budget constraints exist for the business or
individual as well as what the physical constraints of where
the network is to be located will help the stakeholders make
the correct decisions on which topology and network would
be most beneficial to them.
