FIGURES OF SPEECH

• A figure of speech is an expression used to make a greater effect on your


reader or listener. It includes making comparisons, contrasts,
associations, exaggerations and constructions. It also gives a much
clearer picture of what you are trying to convey.

SIMILE
MEANING
• A simile is a figure of speech that is mainly used to compare two
or more things that possess a similar quality. It uses words such
as ‘like’ or ‘as’ to make the comparison.
EXAMPLES
• As slow as a sloth
• As busy as a bee
• As innocent as a lamb
• Jumps like a frog
• Sings like a cuckoo
• Runs like the wind
USAGE
* My love is like a red rose.
* My brother and I fight like cats and dogs all the time.
ALLITERATION
MEANING
• Alliteration is a literary device that uses similar phonetic
sounds in continuity to make an effect. This device is usually
used to decorate the words with a musical, lyrical or
emotional effect.

OXYMORON
• MEANING
• a phrase that combines two words that seem to be
the opposite of each other.
• EXAMPLES
• Parting is such sweet sorrow.”
• “Why, then, O brawling love! O loving hate!
METAPHOR
• MEANINGS
• A metaphor is a figure of speech that is used to
make a comparison, but in a way different from a
simile. It makes the comparison as if it was literally
true. In other words, it can be said that a metaphor
is an implied comparison.
• EXAMPLES
• My mom has a heart of gold.
• My friend’s sister, Sharon, is a night owl.
