What are Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs)
Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are adult stem cells isolated from different
In humans, these sources are bone marrow, fat (adipose tissue), umbilical
cord tissue (Wharton’s Jelly) or amniotic fluid (the fluid surrounding a fetus).
umbilical cord.
MSCs, can differentiate into many different types of cells within the body,
Bone cells, Cartilage, Muscle cells, Neural cells, Skin cells, and Corneal cells.

Selection of marker for MSCs
The International Society for Cellular Therapy {ISCT} proposed positive and
negative markers that enabled researchers to distinguish MSCs from other
cells in the bone marrow compartment.
The negative markers were selected to include surface antigens that are
expressed by hematopoietic cells, while
the positive markers were selected to include surface antigens that are
absent from most hematopoietic cells
The purity of MSCs can be increased by using more than one MSC marker for
positive selection.
