RECURSIVE FORM OF
A SEQUENCE
Recursive Form of a
Sequence
A sequence is said to be in
recursive form if the first
term and a recursive formula
are given.
Recursive Formula
Is an expression used to
determine the nth term of
the sequence by using the
term that precedes it.
EXAMPLE 1
Find the next two terms in the
given sequence; then write it in
recursive form.
a. {7, 12, 17, 22, 27, …}
b. {3, 7, 15, 31, 63, …}
EXAMPLE 2
The recursive formula of a
sequence is where Find the next
four terms of the sequence.
Explicit Form of Sequence
A sequence can also be expressed
in a form in which a preceding term
is not necessary to find the
succeeding terms. This explicit form
can be used to find a term of the
sequence by determining its
EXAMPLE 1
Determine the next two terms in the
given sequence. Then write the
explicit form of sequence.
a.{ 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, …}
b.{3, 5, 9, 17, 33, …}
EXAMPLE 2
Use the given explicit form of a
sequence to write its first four terms.
SERIES
•Is the indicated sum of the
terms of a sequence
•It is denoted by where n
refers to the number of terms
SERIES
•The sum of the term of the
sequence 0, can be expressed
as 0 + .
FINITE SERIES
•If a sequence is finite, its
corresponding series is a
finite series
EXAMPLE
The series
=0 (1 term)
(2 term)
(3 term)
(4 term)
INFINITE SERIES
•When no restrictions are
imposed on n
EXAMPLE
•The ellipsis (…) indicates that other
terms follow, but are omitted for
convenience of writing. The
simplified sum of a series for a
specific value of n is called the
value of the series.
EXAMPLE
Find the indicated value for each series
a.
b.
SUMMATION
NOTATION
•It makes use of the symbol a Greek
letter equivalent to S, which is the
first letter of the word sum.
SUMMATION
NOTATION
• The series 1 + 3 + 5 + 7 + 9 can be written
as
• The variable n is referred to as the index of
summation. The expression (2n + 1) is the
general rule, which indicates that each term
of the series is of this form.
EXAMPLE 1
Write each in expanded form.
Then find its value.

summation notation
