Types of Ingested Poisons → * Over-the-counter medications: → Aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen * Prescription medications: → Opioids, benzodiazepines, antidepressants * Household products: → Bleach, detergents, cleaning solvents * Plant toxins: → Mushrooms, wild berries(Jerusalem berries ,ivy, pokeweed berries), plants ie datura * Agricultural chemicals: → Pesticides, herbicides Management → General Principles → • Assess DRAB, respond as needed, and treat any more urgent injuries as needed. • Immediately call the Poison Control Center or emergency medical services (911). • Do not induce vomiting unless specifically directed by medical professionals. • Do not give the person food or drink. • If unconscious place person in recovery position • Wipe any vomit away from their mouth and keep their head pointing down, to allow vomit escape without them breathing it in or swallowing. • Keep the person calm and comfortable. • NB; Fluid will breakdown the harmful substances into smaller compounds resulting in the poison being absorbed into the body more quickly. Specific Measures → * Give activated charcoal(carbon): → May bind to the poison(adsorbs) and prevent its absorption into the body. Gastric lavage: →( Placing a tube through the mouth or nose into stomach then flushing saline solns followed by suction of gastric contents) * Ipecac syrup: → An emetic that may induce vomiting (no longer commonly used). * Supportive care: → Oxygen, fluids, medications to treat symptoms (e.g., seizures, respiratory depression). Do’s and Don'ts → Dos → • Keep the person supervised until medical help arrives. • Collect and bring any containers or product labels to the medical facility. • Follow the instructions of the Poison Control Center or medical professionals. • If the person is vomiting, turn them on their side(recovery position) to prevent aspiration. Don'ts → • Do not induce vomiting unless directed by medical professionals. • Do not give the person food or drink. • Do not delay calling for medical help. • Do not try to guess the type of poison ingested. • Do not attempt home remedies without consulting a doctor. Prevention → • Store all medications and household products safely out of reach of children. • Keep plants that are poisonous out of the home. • Teach children about the dangers of ingesting unknown substances. • Dispose of used or expired medications properly.
