Present simple
Indicates a habitual action and something that is always true.
Signals: Since/for

Past simple
Indicates a finished action. Something that
happened in the past and has no connection to
the moment of speaking.

Past continuous

The past perfect tense
Use:

Signals: Before/ after/ when/
I had had breakfast before I went to work.
(Right) After/ When I had had breakfast I went to
work.
Hardly ..... when/ no sooner .... than
Hardly had I had breakfast when I went to work.
No sooner had I had breakfast than I went to work.
Have – had – had
Past perfect continuous
An action happened before another
action or before a moment of time in the
past.

E.g:

Simple future
An action that will happen in the future
Decisions taken at the moment of speaking
