CELL THEORY
DEFINITION
 Cell can be defined as the basic,
structural, functional, and biological
unit of all organism.
 Cell is the building block of all
organism.
 Without cell there is no existence
there will be no living been.
HISTORY OF CELL
 In 1665, Robert Hooke discovered the remain ant
of a dead cell when using his newly invented
microscope. Then he called it ‘cell’ because of it
tiny structure.
 1838, Mathias Schneider a German botanist
announced all plant are made up of cell.
 A year later, Theodor Schwann announced that
plant cell is similar to plant cell.
That year Matthias Schneider and Theodor Schwann
was awarded the cell theory.
 Twenty years later, Rumford Virchow made a very
important point in the cell theory. He proclaimed
that all cell are replicates of existing cell.
CELL THEORY
the following are the cell theory;
 All living things are made up of cell
 Cell is the basic unit of structure
and function in an organism.
 All cell are replicates of existing cell
i.e. cell come form pre-existing cell.
TYPES OF CELLS
Cell are classified;

According to the one with nuclear

membrane

and according to the number of cells

possessed by the organism.
CLASSIFICATION BASED ON
NUCLEAR MEMBRANCE.
Thy are divided into I. prokaryotic cell
ii. Eukaryotic cell
i. Prokaryotic cell
refers to cell with no
nucleus surrounded by nuclear
membrane i.e. their genetic
materials are not ungloved by the
nuclear materials.
It nucleus don’t support protein and
daughter cell are formed by binary
fission.
ii. Eukaryotic cell
this refers to cell whose nucleus
or genetic materials are surrounded
by nuclear membrane.

They are mostly multi-cellular i.e. plants,

animals, and fungi.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PROKARYOTIC
AND EUKARYOTIC CELL
Prokaryotic Eukaryotic
 they are unicellular  They are multicellular
 They use only simple  They use simple diffusion,
diffusion transport active, and passive
mechanism. transport mechanism.
 They produce asexually  They produce asexually
by binary fission. by mitosis
 They reproduce sexually  They reproduce sexually
by conjugation. by formation of gamete
 They have short life span  They have long life span
 70 Ribosome.  80 Ribosome
CLASSIFICATION BASED ON
QUANTITY
They are classify into;
I. Unicellular
II. Multicellular
1. UNICELLULAR; unicellular organism are
organism with single cell i.e. they have only
one cell, one cell membrane encloses all the
organelle except the nucleus of the cell.
One cell is able to perform all the same
functions as the multicellular cell.
2. MULTICELLULAR; multicellular organisms are
organisms with numerous cell, different cell
have specific area of function.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MULTI-
CELLLUAR AND UNI CELLULAR CELL
 It consist of single cell  It consist of numerous
 Most of it are cells
prokaryotic cell  Most are eukaryotic
 They are autotrophic cell
and aquatic  They are both
 Includes bacteria, heterotrophic and
amoeba, ache, e.t.c. autotrophic
 Includes plants,
animals and fungi.
