Chapter 1

Introduction

Social media is a network of websites and applications which

enables individuals to converse with each other. It also allows users
to generate, use, exchange and discuss the content available in the
worldwide web. The overwhelming use of internet and social media among
students causes both negative and positive effects on the user. Social
media addiction is one manifestation of such negative effects. Social
media addiction is an unhealthy dependencies on interactive platforms
such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Like most dependencies, social
media addiction manifests as overuse and difficulty in abstaining.
Ironically, one common effect of the problem is social isolation. This
increases self-consciousness and may lead to social anxiety disorder.
Mostly among the teenagers social media addiction has become a serious
problem, Grade 11 students are not immune to this modern age social
problem. Not only does this addiction affect the people or in this case
students life but also the people around them, because one of the
effects of social media addiction is social isolation and that affects
even the people that care about the individuals that are addicted to
social media. It’s a real phenomena that can affect a person and
students alike, to protect against this hazard. It is important to study
this phenomenon amongst this group of young people.
The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of addiction
to social media on Grade 11 students, and what are the cons to social
media addiction and how it affects a Grade 11 students academic
performance. This study also serves to counter this type of addiction,
and how to avoid such addiction in the first place.

Results and Discussion

This study anchors to support the data gathered from the

qualitative research and to know why the students of Dulangan National
High School are addicted to social media and how it affects their
school performance. The conduct of the research generated data that are
relevant and can be used to support further details for the students.

The following questions were raised:

1. Why are Grade 11 students addicted to social media.
2. In what way does social media affect a students academic
performance?
3. What could be the solution to this type of addiction?
4. How does this addiction affect their general life style.
The effects of addiction to social media is a real phenomena that occurs
to people, mostly students this days. This study conforms to the answers
given by the respondents which we’re the grade 11 students during the
interview process. When the grade 11 students we’re asked what are the
effects of being addicted to social media and why are they addicted to
it, most of them answered the questions with negative effects while
some also answered with positive response.
1: Social media has negative effects on me in a way that I cannot focus
on studying and other school activities, and the results are that my
academic performance started to decline. Being able to go online and
watch and react to contents was the reason I became addicted to social
media, because of the enjoyment I get of it.

2: Being addicted to social media has affected me negatively because I

spend of most of my time being online that it has affected my school
performance. I was always curious of what the new trend was, so I always
want to go online and see the new trend so I don’t get left out of the
loop of new trends on social media. Most of the time I prioritize social
media more than my studies.

Results also shows that some students answers that they we’re able to
get positive effects of social media, like share information and news
and communicate with others, they think that social media can be helpful
if a person uses it properly and try to minimize time usage on it.
1: Social media sites helped me in a way that I can get helpful
information that may prove to be helpful in my studies in order to
increase my performance in school. I can browse social media to get
some entertainment but also not get distracted and focus on my
studies.

2: Social media has become my stress reliever, I could go online and

react and share my thoughts as well. I use it not just to relieve stress
but to also see other people’s post and thoughts. How are my family and
friends doing, what are they doing, what are the new trends. This are
just some reason why I log in to my social media accounts .

This are some of the results we’ve gathered from the interview process,
as you can see there are different ways social media can affect you’re
academic performance in both negative and positive effects, all in all
it will depend on the student how they utilize their time on social
media and balance it with the time for studying.

Summary, conclusion and recommendations

The primary objective of this study was to find out why are grade
11 students addicted to social media and what are the effects of it to
their academic performance in school. The first part of this chapter
shows our research’s summary. The second part is the conclusion we’ve
come upon. The third part will provide recommendation for the students,
parents, and teachers to counter social media addiction.
Summary of the study
Altogether there are a lot of grade 11 students in Dulangan
National High School, that use social media properly and there are those
who are addicted to social media which affects their academic
performance, some may have positive effects because they use it to catch
up with family and friends, relieve stress, experience joy, watch dramas
and trends, while some grade 11 students also use it to communicate and
gain factual information that helps them in their daily living and
academic performance, but some students use social media blindly and
they get addicted and they forget the harms of social media addiction
to their daily living and school performance. That is why teachers
should guide students that are addicted, and parents should also take
time to watch over their child and try to reprimand them, that they
should prioritize the essential things in a person’s life, to better
their health and academic performance for a better future.
Conclusion of the study

In conclusion students should always be aware of the danger that

an addiction to social media may cause them, base on the above studies
we can say that students that use social media properly and those who
aimlessly use it have a big difference in it’s effect in their academic
performance, to those who use it properly they have an advantage since
they use social media to communicate, share and enjoy content but also
not getting addicted to social media which does not affect their
academic performance negatively, while those who use it irresponsibly
get addicted, resulting in not being able to focus in studying that
leads to poor academic performance, that affects them and everyone
around that cares for them.
Recommendations

This study recommends that students should limit their usage of

social media, manage their time properly, and try to find ways to get
entertainment without the use of social media, the best way not get
addicted is to not use it as much as possible, this way a student can
be entertained and gather useful information, without having to lose
focus on studying.

To the parents of students, this study recommends that you should

give time to you’re children so that you can also watch over them while
respecting their privacy, in order to guide them properly to avoid such
addiction. Scold them responsibly if they are losing track of what’s
essential to them as a child and student.

To the teachers of students, this study also recommends that

teachers should always be observant to students in order to keep them
from getting addicted to things, in this case is social media addiction.
reprimand them if there grades are falling, and teach them how to manage
and avoid such addictions, so that their academic performance won’t be
affected.
