1 In a group, brainstorm what you know about fruits and seeds.

• Plants need to spread their seeds away from themselves.
• We call this seed dispersal. • Seed dispersal happens when a fruit is ripe. • The seeds are ready to grow into new plants. • Seeds grow into young plants called seedlings. • Seedlings need room to grow. • They also need light and water. Plants are adapted to disperse their seeds in different ways: 1. By animals 2. By wind 3. By water 4. By explosion 5. Some fruits drop and roll Questions 1 Which seeds would grow better: those in a tomato left on the plant, or those in a tomato eaten by a bird? Say why. Ans: The seeds eaten by a bird. The bird would spread the seeds in its droppings away from the parent plant. They would be able to get more light and water for growth. 2 Do you think peach seeds can be dispersed by animals? Say why or why not. Ans: No. peach seed are big and hard. 3 Make a drawing of a seed you think would be dispersed in an animal’s fur. Ans: Draw seed with spines, hooks or spikes 4 How can people disperse seeds? Ans: We can plant them in our gardens and we can carry them on our clothes and shoes. THANK YOU ALL!
