Weight
management
Weight management is essential to
prevent and control many diseases.
Keeping a healthy weight gives more
energy to enjoy life and can help
prevent common noncommunicable
diseases such as diabetes, heart
diseases, stroke, and cancer.
Preventing and Controlling
Diseases:
• Diabetes: Excess weight, particularly around
the abdomen, can increase the risk of
developing type 2 diabetes. Managing weight
helps improve insulin sensitivity and blood
sugar control.
• Heart Disease: Being overweight can lead to
high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and
• Stroke: Obesity can contribute to conditions
like high blood pressure and atherosclerosis
(narrowing of the arteries), which increase the
risk of stroke.
• Cancer: Certain cancers, such as breast,
colon, and prostate cancer, have been linked
to obesity. Maintaining a healthy weight may
lower the risk of developing these cancers.
These diseases are usually generated by
unhealthy eating habits, genes,
environment, income, and lifestyle. Aside
from active involvement in physical
activities and exercises, the body needs
energy absorbed from food to meet the
demands of daily activities.
It is essential to know the different
factors that affect the performance of an
individual. According to Abraham
Maslow's hierarchy of needs (1943), air,
water, and food are the metabolic
requirements or the physiological needs
that should be met for human survival.
1.Physiological needs are biological
requirements for human survival, e.g.,
air, food, drink, shelter, clothing, warmth,
and sleep. Our most basic need is for
physical survival, and this will be the first
thing that motivates our behavior. Once
that level is fulfilled, the next level up is
what motivates us, and so on.

2. Safety needs – people want to
experience order, predictability, and
control in their lives. For example,
emotional security, financial security
(e.g., employment, social welfare), law
and order, freedom from fear, social
stability, property, health, and well-being
(e.g., safety against accidents and
3. Love and belongingness-needs refers
to a human emotional need for
interpersonal relationships, affiliating,
connectedness, and being part of a
group. Examples of belongingness needs
include friendship, intimacy, trust,
acceptance, receiving and giving
affection, and love.
4. self-Esteem-needs are the fourth level
in Maslow’s hierarchy and include self-
worth, accomplishment, and respect.
Esteem is the typical human desire to be
accepted and valued by others. People
often engage in a profession or hobby to
gain recognition, which gives them a
sense of contribution or value.
5. Self-actualization needs are the highest
level in Maslow’s hierarchy, and refer to
the realization of a person’s potential,
self-fulfillment, seeking personal growth,
and peak experiences. This level of need
refers to what a person’s full potential is
and the realization of that potential.
The caloric balance scale is a key concept
in managing body weight and overall
health. It’s all about the relationship
between the calories you consume
(through food and drink) and the calories
you expend (through physical activity and
bodily functions).
Calorie is the measurement of energy
we get from food. The number of
calories eaten should be equal to the
energy the body burns to maintain the
body weight. When a person eats and
drinks more than the calories they
burn, it results in weight gain or, at

remain in balance and maintain your

from foods must be balanced with
the calories used in normal body
