WHAT IS A SEQUENCE?
A sequence It can be a pattern
is a pattern. of:
• objects
• music
• letters
• or numbers
SEQUENCE
11

The different numbers occurring in

any particular sequence are
known as terms. The terms of a
sequence are denoted by

a1, a2, a3,

….,an
KINDS OF SEQUENCE
12

FINITE SEQUENCE
Contains a limited number of terms.
It has an end or last term

EXAMPLE:
a.Days of the Week
{ Sunday, Monday, Tuesday,…,
Saturday}

b. First 10 positive perfect square:

{1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100}
KINDS OF SEQUENCE
13

INFINITE SEQUENCE
Contains a countless number of terms.
The sequence continues without stopping or it
has no end.
Ellipsis (…) shows that the sequence are infinite.

EXAMPLE:
a. Counting numbers
{ 1, 2, 3, 4, …}

b. Multiples of 5:
{5, 10, 15, 20, 25, …}
14

Determine if the sequence is finite or infinite.

1. 2, 4, 6, 8, ... ________________

2. 5, 10, 15, 20 ________________

3. 1, 3, 9, 27, 81 ________________
4. 5, 9, 13, 17,... ________________
Identify if a given set is a finite or infinite
15

set, then find the next term.

1.0, 6, 12, 18, _____ , 30
Answer: Finite, 24

2. 13, 10, 7, ___ , …

Answer: Infinite, 4
FINDING THE
nth TERM
= 2n + 1
WRITE THE FIRST FOUR TERMS OF THE 18

SEQUENCE
= 2n + 1
𝒊𝒇 𝒏=𝟏 𝒊𝒇 𝒏=𝟐 𝒊𝒇 𝒏=𝟑 𝒊𝒇 𝒏=𝟒 𝒊𝒇 𝒏=𝟏𝟓 Click icon to add picture

= 2n + 1 = 2n + 1 = 2n + 1 = 2n + 1 = 2n + 1
= 2(1) + 1 = 2(2) + 1 = 2(3) + 1 = 2(4) + 1 = 2(15) + 1
= 2 + 1 = 4 + 1 = 6 + 1 = 8 + 1 = 30 + 1
=3 =5 =7 =9 = 31

3, 5, 7, 9,... 31
19

What is the thirteenth

term of the sequence
=n+1
SOLUTION:
=n+1
= 13 + 1
= 14
A. Fill in the missing blanks and determine if
the sequence is finite or infinite.
1. 17, 15, 13, _____, 9, 7, 5, 3
2. 0, 5, 10, _____ 20, 25,…
3. 34, 44, 54, 64, ____, 84, 94
B. Write the first 3 terms of the sequence
whose nth term is given by the formula.
an = 5n - 2
ASSIGNMENT:
INSTRUCTION:
In a ¼ pcs of paper, read and analyze and solve the word
problem.
