A scientific man ought to have no wishes, no affections, - a mere heart of stone. Charles Darwin

Historical Background
Darwin Was a scientist during the 1800s, when creationism was common belief. During the mid 1800s many scientific advances were made. One of the Main advances was the Theory of Evolution. Darwin took a trip around the world from 1831 to 1836 and thought that species evolved, instead of being created by god. Because of how deeply religious people were at the time, Darwins ideas were laughed at, but later his ideas became widely accepted.

Years later, Darwin went to University of Edinburgh Medical school with his brother. But, he found medical school boring and stressful, and joined a naturalist student society. Annoyed, Darwins father sent him to Christ College, in Cambridge. Soon after Darwin left the college, with a new passion as a naturalist.

Influences: Darwins influence can still be seen today. Pick up any biology book and you see whole chapters devoted to Evolution and natural selection. A Theory created by Darwin. He is arguably the most important naturalist in history. Obstacles: Mainly, the church, for years the church had taught everyone in the world that god had created man the way he is and the earth had only been around for a few thousand years, when Darwin presented his theory, the church and many of its subjects laughed at it. Even today some people refuse to acknowledge it Citation:^ Browne 2002, pp. 103104, 379

Famous Speeches/Quotes

A man who dares to waste one hour of his life has not discovered the value of life. Darwin

This quote is saying how if you have an hour you want to waste in your life, you havent found your calling yet, this directly relates to Darwins life, as he would have never wasted an hour researching what he loved most, nature.

"Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, and not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science"

This quote talks about the dangers of ignorance, because ignorance causes a lot of the worlds problems, and many of Darwins. Simply People who refused to see reason prevented his theory to become majorly successful in his lifetime.

Publications and awards

On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life : Possibly Darwins most famous work, this book was written in the years after his return from the Galapagos, it contained his theories on evolution and natural selection.
