5 COST OF ELECTRICAL ENERGY USAGE

SCIENCE FORM 3: CHAPTER 8 GENERATION OF ELECTRICITY

POWER, VOLTAGE, AND CURRENT RATING

Power rate of energy changed Different electrical appliances converts electrical energy at different rates SI unit of power watt(W) or joule per second

POWER, VOLTAGE, AND CURRENT RATING

Lets say, 1 item has P & V rating of 1000 W, 230 V This appliance is operated at a power of 1000W if it is connected to a 230 V mains. If the voltage supplied is less than 230 V, the appliance will be operated at a power less than 1000 W But if the voltage supplied is more than 230 V, the power will be more than 1000 W and might damage it!

Example 1
Calculate the electrical power of a 12 V bulb operating on a current of 1.5 A

Example 2
A desk fan has a voltage of 240 V and uses a current of 2.0 A. what is its power?

Example 3
A 240 V television has a power of 120 W. Calculate the current rating of the television

ELECTRICAL ENERGY AND POWER

Electrical Power
the rate which an appliance converts electrial energy into other forms of energy Measure in watts (W) or kilowatts (kW). A 1 kW electrical heater will change 1000 joules of electrical energy per second into heat energy

Example 4
A 100 W light bulb is used for 5 minutes. Calculate the amount of electrical energy converted into heat and light

Example 5
If a 40 W light bulb uses 1600 J of electrical energy, how long was it switched on?

CALCULATING THE COST OF ELECTRICAL ENERGY USAGE

TNB uses kilowatt-hour (kWh) to measure electrical energy, instead of Joules Electrical energy is calculated in terms of unit. 1 kWh is equivalent to 1 unit of electrical energy

Example 6
If the rate per unit of electrical energy is 20 cent, calculate the amout you have to pay if you switch on a 900 W air conditional for 5 hours

Example 7
A 100 W light bulb is switched on from 7.00 pm until 7.00 am every day. Calculate the cost of electrical energy used for one month (30 days) if the rate of electrical energy is 21.8 cent per unit
