Biography

  • Often called the bridge between Blues and Rock and Roll, it’s hard to find a great guitarist who wasn’t influenced by Buddy Guy’s pioneering work.

Born and raised in Louisiana in the 1930s, Buddy took to music quickly, initially playing with a homemade Diddley bow until someone gifted him a Harmony acoustic guitar which is now considered an important artefact in the history of rock and roll.

Buddy moved to Chicago in 1957 and began to be influenced by the likes of Muddy Waters, developing his Chicago blues style during this time. Buddy signed a deal with Chess records in 1959 however many feel the label’s conservative tendencies held Buddy back in his formative years. Whilst his live performances were known for their passion and ferocity, Chess label founder described Guy’s playing as noise and did not release it as it should have been.

During this time however, Buddy’s playing had had a profound effect on a number of musicians we now count among the greatest guitarists of all time. Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton both took influence from Guy as they began their careers. This notoriety amongst the guitarist elite helped Guy to experience a career boom in the blues revival period of the late 80s and early 90s, one that has continued ever since.

In 2005 Buddy was inducted to the Rock and Roll hall of fame by Eric Clapton and BB King. With everyone from Slash to the Rolling Stones singing Buddy’s praises, he has had a powerful impact on rock and roll and music as a whole that will be remembered for years to come.

Live reviews

  • “Heaven is lying at Buddy Guy's feet while listening to him play guitar” Jimi Hendrix. Even if you do not love the blues, but at minimum have respect for where rock and roll inherited its roots, you have to see Buddy Guy. He is an original. He’s the real deal. He learned from Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker and all the old masters who are long gone. Seeing Buddy like is both an homage to the past, but also a taste of the blues here and now. This is the guitarist that influenced Eric Clapton, Slash, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Ronnie Wood, Keith Richards, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Billy Gibbons and many more. Buddy can finesse his Stratocaster to any sounds from any position at anytime. Any remiss I have for never having seen Jimi live is quickly subsided knowing that Jimi deeply influenced by the great Buddy Guy.

Expecting any number of classic blues or rock numbers such as ‘Messin’ with the Kid’, Voodoo Child’ or ‘Hoochie, Choochie Man’,

I’ve now seen Buddy play 5 times in the past two years (yea, I was late to the game here), and each time completely lost in his trance. Entertaining, funnier than hell, but most importantly weaving guitar licks beyond moral man.

  • Considered to be one of the greatest guitarists of all time, Buddy Guy is still touring globally despite being nearly 80 years old. A staple embodiment of Chicago Blues, a guitarist who once played with the Muddy Blues was not likely to take early retirement and when you view his natural mannerism onstage you understand why.

Buddy is most happy when performing and interacting with audiences and he is happy to share unbelievable tales of the artists he has had the privilege of sharing stages with. His Blues sounds have real authenticity and seem to resonate with the man himself, obviously music was so integral to his life and he has toured the world during times of social unrest so it feels as though Buddy has a connection with his music and of course his guitar.

Covering music from some of his own favourite artists including Albert King and John Lee Hooker, he reimagines them in his own unique manner and the audience cheer with equal enthusiasm. The great man leaves the stage with the impression that should his health allow it, he will still be touring in another decade.

  • This was my Second Concert seeing Buddy Guy... if you enjoy the "Blues" this is the Artist to see. His Energy and interactions with the Audience was one of the Best, and one borne of pure Love of the the Audience and Music. He tells a few Stories, in a Lovely way, paying Homage and saluting the past Giants of the Blues Genere, even playing their Hits. Buddy Guy also has a very Playful side to him, and he will play his Guitar in all sorts of Strange ways, like using a drumstick, or a piece of Cloth, or even by rubbing the guitar Strings on dfferent parts of his body. At the end of the Concert Buddy Guy continued playing while mingling with the audience. I even managed a Selfie with Buddy Guy.

  • Buddy Guy's performance was incredible! His passion for his talent and his energy is mind blowing! He is a very talented and gifted man! It's no wonder that he has mentored some of the greatest guitar players in the world! Everyone from Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, to Stevie Ray Vaughn! My most memorable moment of the evening of the Experience Hendrix Tour in Avila Beach, California, was when I went up to the stage and Buddy saw me and as he gazed into my eyes, gently handed me his guitar pick! What an unforgettable moment! Eyes truly are the windows of the Soul! He is a very special and enlightened man!! #mybuddy

  • I can't believe I waited this long to see Buddy Guy. He's 80 years old and has been touring consistently since I can remember. You wouldn't believe the energy he brings to the stage. His band had it together, too, especially the keyboardist/organist. What a voice. And he shreds on the guitar. It was a cloudy night, and Buddy brought the rain and lightning with his words, almost on command. It was unreal. The only downside is that since it was outside, we had to scatter because of the lightning. And he was only three songs in. But what little I got to see was well worth it. Go see him while you still can.

  • This man is an American (Blues) legend. I could leave it at that....but, he what I didn’t realize was just how entertaining and funny he is. In addition to playing he would interject stories of his youth or playing with other artists.....he came all the way through the audience off the stage, too, which was a real thrill. I got to take my teen son to this so he could see a legend before they are all gone. Buddy is 82 but you’d never know! A life long experience to remember! You’re really missing out if you miss this show. We love you, Buddy!

  • What a guitarist, singer, performer, story-teller, and personality! The most amazing moments - he took his guitar and mic into the audience, down one aisle, across the back, and up another aisle back to the stage. He took his time, posed for pics and selfies and videos, kept singing and playing guitar without missing too many notes, for an entire song. It was magic!
