DVD and Blu-ray Releases for January 26th, 2010

January 26th, 2010

It's a soft week at the top, as the biggest release of the week is Michael Jackson's This Is It. There are a few other wide releases hitting the home market as well, but all the rest were box office disappointments of varying degrees. This Is It is a good movie and the DVD / Blu-ray are worth picking up, but they are not Pick of the Week material. For that we have to look to a smaller Canadian film, Pontypool, which earned excellent reviews while the DVD gets a rarely-awarded Puck of the Week. More...

Featured DVD Review: The Boys are Back

January 25th, 2010

The Boys are Back opened in limited release late in September of last year, which is a tad early for Awards Season, but there was some buzz going in, especially for the acting by Clive Owen and the two younger actors. However, while the overall reviews were very strong and the film opened with a reasonably good per theater average, it never really caught on with moviegoers and the award nominations never came to fruition. (George MacKay did earn a British Independent Film Awards nomination, but lost out to Katie Jarvis from Fish Tank.) Then again, judging a film by those standards might be too high and seeing it on the home market without the pressures of Awards Season and per theater averages might allow it to shine better. More...

Capitalism is a Moneymaker on the Per Theater Chart

September 29th, 2009

Capitalism - A Love Story lead the way on the per theater chart with an average of $57,991 in four theaters over the weekend, while it made nearly $300,000 in just five days. Coco Before Chanel was well back, but it still made an impressive average of $35,427 in five theaters. For both films, this is a good portent for its potential to expand. Brief Interviews with Hideous Men was the only other film in the $10,000 club after it made $18,510 in its lone theater. More...

Countdown to Limited Releases

September 25th, 2009

As September ends, we move closer to the start of Awards Season and there are a number of films that look on paper to be Awards Season contenders. There are also a lot of films that are earning terrible reviews and while likely disappear from theaters in short order. Amazingly, the widest release of the week appears to be a Canadian film, Trailer Park Boys - Countdown to Liquor Day. More...
