DVD and Blu-ray Releases for April 5th, 2011

April 5th, 2011

It's Tron week with at least seven releases related to Tron and Tron: Legacy. This appears to have scared away the competition, because outside of those releases, there's not much of a selection. Actually, there are three $100 million hits coming out this week; however, one doesn't come out till Friday, so I'll likely deal with it next week after the screener arrives, and the other is so bad it's best to pretend it doesn't exist. Those two films are clearly the Pick of the Week, but depending on where you buy your DVDs, the Combo Pack may or may nor be less expensive than buying the two films separately, so double-check before you buy. More...

Contest - Turning Iron into Gold

April 25th, 2008

Summer blockbuster season is finally here. ... Or least it starts on Friday the 25th with the opening of Iron Man. That is this week's target film. In order to win, one must simply predict Iron Man's opening weekend box office. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win The Golden Compass and Fall of the Roman Empire, both on DVD. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win The Golden Compass and Lars and the Real Girl. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

DVD Releases for April 15, 2008

April 14th, 2008

Not a particularly strong week for DVD releases this week. Sure, there are a few worth picking up, but there were far more that felt like filler. In fact, there was only one contender for DVD Pick of the Week, Juno. I would certainly recommend the Blu-ray version over either DVD edition. More...

No One Tops Old Men on Per Theater Chart

November 13th, 2007

No Country for Old Men was the latest Oscar hopeful to hit theaters, and while so many have failed to live up to expectations, this was not the case here. Despite opening in 28 theaters, it pulled in more than $1 million over the weekend and led the per theater chart with an average of $43,798. The only other film to come close was Holly with an opening of $32,406 in one theater. Finally, Om Shanti Om was the second limited release to crack $1 million over the weekend, earning an average of $15,475 in its 114 theaters. More...

Devil's Far from Dead on the Per Theater Chart

October 30th, 2007

Before the Devil Knows You're Dead opened in first place on the per theater chart with an impressive average of $36,919 in two theaters. Pete Seeger: Power in Song and Wristcutters: A Love Story were well back but still strong with averages of $11,945 and $10,506 respectively. This is a good start, better than most limited releases can hope for, but less than I was expecting. The Darjeeling Limited continues to perform marvelously as it expands as it earned an average of $11,425 in nearly 100 theaters. The overall box office leader, Why Did I Get Married? opened with an average of $10,618. More...

Movie Website Updates for October 7, 2007 - October 13, 2007

October 14th, 2007

Quite a few full sites launched this week, but as is the case most times, there were pretty Spartan at the moment and it will take a few more updates before we can tell if they are award-worthy or not. That said, it was a site for a movie that opens this week, Lars and the Real Girl - Official Site, that won the top prize as it finished adding all the material marked coming soon this week. More...

Using the Clues to Deduce the Real Contenders

October 12th, 2007

An even dozen films on this week's list, including the A Canadian film Weirdsville, which doesn't open in the United States until next week, or it may of opened there last week, there seems to be some confusion on the matter. However, the best bet this week is Lars and the Real Girl, which could expand wide over the coming weeks. More...

Contest - Night of Prizes

October 12th, 2007

The weekend of October 19 is busy for new releases with five earning some degree of wideness. Out out of those five films, 30 Days of Night has the best shot at first place and it is the target film in this week's box office prediction contest. To win one must simply predict the box office opening for 30 Days of Night. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a Lars are the Real Girl poster, Resevation Road poster and Soundtrack, as well as the Gone, Baby, Gone novel. Finally, one lucky entrant will be chosen arbitrarily and that person will win a Gone, Baby, Gone poster. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! Movie Website Updates for September 30 - October 6, 2007

October 6th, 2007

We are starting to get full websites for some of the massive holiday season releases, which should mean there will be at least one award worthy website on each week's list. As for this week, there were a few that have potential assuming the sections marked coming soon live up to the rest of the site. But just one site, The Seeker: The Dark is Rising - Official Site, that was worthy of the Weekly Website Award. More...

Contest - The Real Deal

October 5th, 2007

There's not a single film opening at saturation levels next Friday. In fact, We Own the Night might be the only film to crack 2,000 theaters and because of this, it is this week's target film. To win one must simply predict the box office opening for We Own the Night. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win The Film Crew - Hollywood After Dark. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will win The Film Crew - Killers from Space. Finally, one lucky entrant will be chosen arbitrarily and that person will win The Film Crew - Women of Wongo. In addition, all three winners will also pick up a poster from Lars and the Real Girl, which opens in limited release tonight. And don't forget, The Film Crew - The Giant of Marathon comes out on DVD this Tuesday. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

2007 Preview: October

October 1st, 2007

October means one thing: Free candy. ... Oh yeah, and the unofficial start of Award Season. And Halloween brings us a few horror films as well. Unfortunately, this year October is rather weak, with no film looking like a strong contender for $100 million and most of the films with early Oscar buzz having performed poorly with the critics. The only good news is last October was also weak at the box office, meaning there's at least a reasonable shot at 2007 maintaining its box office lead over 2006. More...

Pete Seeger: Power in Song and Wristcutters: A Love Story were well back but still strong with averages of $11,945 and $10,506 respectively. While those were the only three films to creak $10,000 on the per theater chart, two others came very, very close: Saw IV at $9,977 and Blade Runner at $9,915. More...

Blade Runner Controls the Per Theater Chart

October 16th, 2007

Blade Runner climbed into first place on the Per Theater Chart with an average of $32,681 in two theaters during its second week of re-release. Control debuted in second place with $27,674 in its one theater. Lars and the Real Girl opened with just over $90,000 in 7 theaters for an average of $12,917.

More...

October 12th, 2007

Out out of those five films, 30 Days of Night has the best shot at first place and it is the target film in this week's box office prediction contest.

More...
