DVD and Blu-ray Releases for September 18th, 2012
September 18, 2012
It's quite a busy week on the home market front, but most of the new releases are TV on DVD. This includes Modern Family: Season Three on DVD or Blu-ray, which is a contender for Pick of the Week. The best limited release of the week is The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel on DVD or Blu-ray, while the Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures Blu-ray Box Set is also a contender for Pick of the Week. However, in the end I went with The Cabin in the Woods Blu-ray, which is practically the only first-run release of the week.

Still waiting for the screener for this release. I've liked the show so far, so I'm looking forward to seeing it again.
This film earned just 10% positive reviews. Even if you are a fan of the cast and director, it is still a film you should avoid.
I'm still waiting for the screener for this film. I doubt it will be Oscar-worthy, but it could be entertaining in a low expectations way.
I'm still waiting for this screener to arrive. I'm really looking forward to it, because I'm a big fan of a lot of the cast.
Who would have thought this film would spawn a franchise. The film is selling quite well according to Amazon.com, but there are almost no reviews to judge the film.
Quite a Halloween theme this week, with two films from the actual franchise, plus a number of other horror films.
There are two 3D movies coming out this week. I was expecting to get screeners for both, but so far they are late.
A police procedural show with a female medical examiner as the lead. It's a good show, but the ratings are weak. The extras are good and if you like the show, it's is worth picking up. If you haven't seen it give it a try.
This horror film earned over 90% positive reviews and was a midlevel hit. Did I enjoy it as much as the average critic? Or was I one of the exceptions? Check out our review to find out.
This film earned a surprise Oscar nomination. After all, before the nods were announced, I bet a lot of people never heard of the film. The film did earn great reviews, but failed to turn that into box office success. Extras include an audio commentary track and a making of featurette, which isn't bad for a limited release. Definitely worth picking up.
One of the first signs its truly is Christmas is TV on DVD full series Megasets.
Adrien Brody stars as a substitute teacher who has avoided becoming close to his students or the fellow staff, until his latest assignment, where he becomes close to girl in his first period class, Betty Kaye; a fellow teacher, Christina Hendricks; a teenage prostitute, Sami Gayle. The film just missed overall positive reviews and failed to find an audience in limited release. It should do better on the home market.
I'm still waiting for the screener for this film. It didn't earn as strong reviews has I was hoping and it bombed at the box office. That said, 74% positive reviews is still damn good, so I'm looking forward to seeing the film.
This is Tim Burton's weakest film at the box office. However, it is called his best film by some. Do I think the critics are right? Or were moviegoers right to stay away? Read our review to find out.
If I were in charge of the Olympics, I would strip NBC of the rights to all future Olympics they own, and deal with the inevitable lawsuit, but put someone else in charge before they destroy your brand.
A remake of a classic police procedural show, Hawaii Five-O. Does it live up to its predecessor? Or is it just a generic modern police procedural? Read our review for my opinion.
A film about the creation of the vibrator, which was originally made as medical equipment to cure female hysteria. The film just missed overall positive reviews, but did better than most limited releases. Extras include an audio commentary track, a few featurettes, and deleted scenes. It's worth a rental.
A Blu-ray box set of the complete Indiana Jones franchise, plus a bonus disc with seven hours of extras. Do the films still entertain more than 20 or 30 years later? What extras are included? And do they look and sound good on high definition? Check out our review to find out.
This film flopped at the box office and was torn down by critics when it was first released. Now that 15 years have past, has it aged better? Or were moviegoers right to avoid it the first time? Check out our review for my opinion.
Part documentary and part concert film. Is the documentary portion interesting? Is the concert energetic? How well do these two parts combine? Check out our review to find out.
This film was pushed back a year before being dumped in limited release with no support from the studio. Is it as bad as it was treated? Or could it have been a hit had it been a given a real chance? Read our review for my opinion.
This film is co-written and directed by Rob Reiner and has a major cast. However, its reviews were really bad. I might get the screener to review, but so far it is late. Extras include an audio commentary, featurette, and deleted scenes.
One of the many police procedurals I used to watch. I would say this one is most similar to Castle, but while Castle keeps getting better, this one hasn't, and I stopped watching.
During the first two seasons of this show, I considered it one of the best shows on TV. Does it get better during season three? Or is it showing signs of fading? Check out our review to find out.
This film opened in limited release with a huge per theater average, but its reviews were weak and it couldn't expand. It should do better on the home market.
I'm still waiting for the screener for this movie. It only earned mixed reviews, but I remain cautiously optimistic.
This show began its run last season to mostly positive reviews; however, there were some that called it a campy nighttime soap opera. I don't like soap operas, but I gave it a chance anyway. Did it win me over? Or is my opinion of the show lower than most? Read our review to find out.
A 3-disc, six-hour collection of Steve Martin stand-up specials, comedy specials, TV guest appearances, speeches, etc. It's a lot of entertainment for $30.
This show earn good reviews when it first aired, and picked up a People's Choice Award nomination for Favorite New TV Comedy, but it struggled to find an audience losing 40% of its initial audience and overall it placed 71st for the season. Extras are not great with just a featurette, deleted scenes, and outtakes, but that's not bad either.
One of the few shows on CW that isn't doing terrible in the ratings. In fact, despite airing on Friday, which is generally a death-sentence for TV shows, its ratings are better than average for the network. It is also still one of the best shows on the network, even if it is off its peak quality. Extras include audio commentary tracks on three episodes, more than 100 minutes of making of featurettes, deleted scenes, and outtakes. Granted, if it doesn't turn around soon, this season could be its last.
This kids show isn't as popular as it used to be, but the DVD is one of the better selling new releases of the week.
